“ok, but horrible breakfast”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 May 2014

First the good, it's easily walkable from the ferry or bus station. The dorms are clean and the bathrooms are also. The staff is helpful and friendly, they have maps of the town for easy direction. The back area behind the kitchen is cluttered with crap. But, the breakfast is by far the worst I've had in South America. At first sight it looks like a nice spread. However, the cereal is stale, all of it. There is no cold milk, just hot for the cornflakes. The hot water was not refilled and so no tea could be made. The coffee was not in an insulated thermos so it was cold. The bread on the first day was nice, the second...scraps of old baguettes. The fruit was not ripe and inedible. The juice was ok, then saw it being put away uncovered, unrefridgerated in a cabinet. Go out for breakfast, make your own, or find a better deal elsewhere.

Hostel is located near the old town part of Colonia however doesn't have many good qualities. It's clean and well located and the staff are really nice.
However, there is one couch to sit on- next to the men's toilet, the front two dorms may as well be on the street as the doors are outside of the hostels main doors, the female dorm is tiny and poorly set out, there are two tables and chairs out the back, under cover but totally open and when it's cold it sucks! The breakfast room is outside and upstairs, everybody got lost looking for it. The ladies bathroom opens right onto the main reception area.
It's expensive so look else where.

We spend one night in the 6-dorm at the beginning of low season. The hostel was only convincing because of its price (280 Peso/night/Person incl. breakfast). Being part of a hostel chain, it might have certain standards.
The location is great (2 blocks from the bus and ship). There were great hot showers and breakfast and wifi was okay. The dorms were functional, in my dorm there were not enough lockers. The kitchen was very small and not very inviting.
Attention of the present staff was mediocre. Besides, I called in the morning of our arrival to reserve two beds in a dorm. They didn't manage to keep them free and when arriving in the late evening they put us in two diferent dorms.
Even though there was an okay cleanlyness standard, the staff didn't seem to care about keeping the place tidy and nice (dirty breakfast tables, plastic bags flying around, etc.).
That's maybe the difference between a hostel chain and a hostel managed by its owner..
For one night due to the price okay. But nothing else.

This place appears to be a 'jackpot find', ticks all the boxes ... pretty building, sociable and relatively inexpensive (as Uruguayan prices go). However, it is somewhat a facade. Ok, it is a sociable place and the kitchen is as good as you will find. However, the fundamental thing is that the building shouldn't be a hostel as most rooms face the courtyard which will leave many people (myself included) frustrated at the loud noise throughout the night. Combine that with the fact that the beds are incredibly narrow and covered with a ridiculous plastic which makes sleep a challenge. Oh, in addition, the bunks feel as if they were made before the city was colonised - brittle!

Distinctly average.

I came to Colonia for a few days and I didn't book an advance. So i checked few other hostels before I came to Che Lagarto. I was lucky to get a dorm and believe me, it's a very good place to stay.
Hostel is not big, so after 1 day you know everybody and feel very comfy. You can cook your own food there. Owner and staff are friendly and very helpful. Rooms are ok, with lockers and aircon (even dorms). Breakfast was good, served in a nice garden, with home-made cakes every morning (Felipe, thank you so much again!).
Location is close to port, but also not far from beach and central street.
I will definitely back to Colonia and Che Lagarto (recommend you to book an advance in high season).

This hostel was very clean (cleanest and nicest bed linens on our whole trip) and the staff was attentive to our needs. The design of the hostel is just so terrible that you absolutely need ear plugs and an eye mask to sleep (we unfortunately had neither). This might be a better fit for young travelers who like to stay up late and drink. Because the rooms are around the only common area (a long table used for breakfast), it's always loud due to some people staying up late and others waking up early. Our room was next to the kitchen and we had all the noise from there too. I agree with another reviewer that the beds were short.

Hostel not well designed - almost all rooms front on to the central courtyard which is noisy late into the night, and again in the early morning as it is used for breakfast as well as late night drinking. Rooms very cramped - we had 3 sets of bunks in a tiny room. Short beds. Breakfast not great. Shower was hot. On the whole pretty disappointing place with far too many people in a small hostel.
