“Perfect sunset”
Reviewed 29 April 2014

The sunset from the harbor was perfect; just the right hues of red, orange and yellow, followed by a great full moon. And the trip from Buenos Aires, Argentina on Buquebus (a boat) was quite interesting.

“If time permits, visit more than one beach and walk on the pier”
Reviewed 25 January 2014

My aunts and I took went on a day trip to Colonia del Sacramento via the Buquebus Rapido from Buenos Aires on January 3rd. I was disappointed to see how brown and muddy the Rio de la Plata was on the crossing. I kept hoping that the water would turn blue (or at least become less muddy) at some point, but it never did before we docked at the port in Colonia. The Bus Turistico Colonia drives along the coast and one can see many beaches, but we did not get off at any of those stops. After the bus ride, we did spend half an hour at the Playa del Rowing, but there were some debris in the water and it was not very inviting to get into. Playa del Rowing is across from the Handcraft Market, which was a more interesting destination for the aunts. I did get a chance to walk down to the pier and take photos of the sailboats and scenery around Puerto de Yates. We returned to Buenos Aires on the 5:45 p.m. ferry, so I missed the sunset over Rio de la Plata.

“Way better than I expected”
Reviewed 7 January 2014

We were in Buenos Aires for three months: We lived in Palermo, San Telmo and have also worked in Retiro and Belgrano during this time. My point is that we have seen quite a lot of Buenos Aires and were in need of an escape from the concrete jungle that - in my personal opinion - has little to offer in terms of variety, cuisine, activities, and landmarks etc. especially for such a huge city. We checked Tripadvisor for all the attractions that may be of interest to us in Buenos Aires and visited them all within a week. We were very bored of Buenos Aires.

We paid Colonia Express AR$300 per ticket (including tax) to get to Colonia. The journey across the Rio de la Plata was a standard one that took an hour (29 miles). Colonia far exceeded my expectations. Unlike the labyrinth of Buenos Aires, it is a varied and small beach/port town with cobbled roads, lighthouses, boats, piers, beaches, etc. Colonia is the most European/Colonial place I've visited since visiting the south of France many years ago. I way pleasantly surprised at how beautiful it is.

You cannot fully appreciate the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires because BA doesn't have any beaches. Colonia however is very different. We stayed in a hostel very close to the port in Colonia del Sacramento. Here you can dine in restaurants, visit old ruins, and appreciate great sunsets all along the edge of the riverbank - which looks more like a coastline than a 'river bank'.

You can pay 34 UYU to catch a public bus to Real de San Carlos (less than one British pound). Here we found stunning beaches with warm water. The water was cloudy, but it is a fresh water river carrying silt and sediments, which is different from being 'dirty'.

Getting to the point; my advice is that if you want to fully appreciate the Rio de la Plata, head to Colonia for a mini beach holiday, but check the weather forecast if only going for just a few days.

Have a look at the photos for a better idea of what the place looks like.

“Breathtaking sunsets”
Reviewed 2 January 2014

On the coast of Colonia you can enjoy the best sunsets over the Rio de la Plata. Over the shore you have some places where you can eat something typical.

“Webbooking prerequisites”
Reviewed 10 December 2013

Colinia express webbooking worked well and was cheaper > counter bought tickets. We accessed on the Uruguaian page and it was cheaper. Just make sure that part of the trip is by bus. Our experience was from BA to Punta del Este a total trip of 9 hours. When you arrive to Montevideo (having web-tickets) make sure you get a voucher from Colonia Express counter to get on the bus to Punta del Este. This worked well. Now back from Punta, it was an hour discusiion to make the Agent understand what we wanted! A voucher to join Montevideo for the return trip. Conclusion, once in the Montevideo terminal counter of Colonia, make sure your return trip is granted and you have a voucher.
