The Hotel Italiano is perfectly located three blocks from the Buquebus Terminal, two blocks from the Old Town, and also two blocks from the main street of Colonia. At night the street is a bit dark but we didn´t feel unsafe at all. The hotel is undergoing refurbishment and all the better for it. Everything is freshly painted in bright colours. The cafeteria has modern furnishing and wide windows that look onto the beautiful pool and gardens. The indoor pool is reminiscent of a Roman bath and the water was deliciously warm for a cool autumn afternoon. It is open from 9am to 9pm. We had three rooms, two on the ground floor and one on the first floor, and all three were very luminous and comfortable, although a bit on the small side. The beds and pillows were soft and the bed linen impeccably clean. You are given bath towels and an extra towel for the pools. You can also rent a bathrobe for 5 dollars. We had an adequate lunch at the hotel and a great buffet breakfast. The staff was very friendly and helped us to choose a restaurant at night and answered all our queries. We were allowed to keep our luggage in reception until our departure at 5 o´clock.I do not know their rates because the hotel was included in our Buquebus package but anyway I would definitely stay here again,

Room Tip: Don´t miss a dip in the indoor pool!

My mother and I stayed there last year for New Year´s(2012-2013) and after returning to Colonia a few days ago a year later (Dec 2013) but stayed at another hotel I realised I hadn´t reviewed this charming bright, clean hotel so well located! I agree with the reviews regarding the small dark rooms, a bit of a let down considering we did not stay in a standard room but a superior which was supposed to be the same as the former but in a better part of the hotel. The hotel has 2 great swimming pools, the indoor one is huge which few people use in the hotter months and the outdoor one is very big as well but has few deck chairs so...nip out before breakfast and book your seating!!

The helpful staff brought out delicious fresh salads and sandwiches at midday to munch by the pool so that we wouldn´t have to get dressed for lunch in the main restaurant. Breakfast was an ample and varied buffet but during high occupancy periods(such as New Year´s!) it becomes a bit crowded and you have to elbow your way through to the "medialunas" (croissants).
I´m looking forward to returning one day once the new rooms have been inaugurated as I expect them to be larger than the one we stayed in. The hotel cold not have a better location, it is very clean and very friendly. It is a 3* sup hotel with a 4* rating.

Room Tip: Ask for a Superior room or Suite but go mentally prepared that the rooms are small.

We spent only one night at the Italiano and wish we had spent more time there. The hotel is clean, orderly, modern with smallish but comfortable rooms. The hotel is a five-minute walk to Colonia's lovely attractions. Its staff is efficient and professional. The desk people are helpful both about the hotel's many offerings but for the city, too. The food is excellent. The rates were very good also. We are happy to recommend the Hotel Italiano. You will like it.

Our room was basic wooden furniture, an old TV and tiny. The small hot water heater in the bathroom (need quick showers!) obscured my 6'3" husband's view in the mirror. The room was clean.
The hotel is in the midst of a renovation with a brand new stainless steel and marble elevator that was mostly turned off. (It's OK. We were only on the 2nd floor and they turned it on when we brought up our suitcase.) The breakfast room is new and spacious but also very basic with little decoration. They are buiding new rooms but I don't know if anyone is staying in them yet.
Breakfast was only cold food, not particularly interesting.
The hotel is located about 3 blocks from the old town area.

We stayed here as part of a package deal with return ferry tix to buenos aires.
The location is ideal, tucked down a street between the river and the main street (Flores).
Such is the size of colonia that anywhere is within walking distance.
The double room was two single beds pushed together but there was a decent shower and mini bar. Breakfast was exceptional if you are fond of bread and jam and horrible coffee but next time I'd think to venture out.
The staff were very helpful and pleasant, id stay again.
