“A surprise!”
Reviewed 2 April 2012

After the not-so-delightful experience of two nights in Bukhara at a poorly restored former mansion converted into a 'boutique' hotel, and a long bus journey to Samarqand, the City Hotel was a real surprise! It may not be high on hotel 'stars' but it is almost spotlessly clean (that's cause for celebration in much of Central Asia). Rooms are small but comfortable with everything one needs and a large flat screen satellite TV hook-up especially good for those hungry for news or for bizarre music videos from as far afield as Moscow and Tehran or Tehrangeles! Breakfast buffet included a lovely array of safe-to-eat food including a superb omelet and a delicious quince jam worthy of the name of sweet Samarkand.

We just came back from our trip to Uzbekistan and we really loved staying at this hotel. The room was comfortable, clean, spacious and warm. The view from the window was lovely, looking out onto the tree-lined University Boulevard. The location is about a 10 minute walk from the Registan and also about 10 minutes from the Russian part of town- as such it served as a good base to explore different neighborhoods. (We walked mostly but the occasional taxi cost around $2-3.) The staff at the hotel was fantastic, very friendly and helpful. (We live in Japan so we are used to a very high of level of service- the staff here did not disappoint). For us this really was the trip of a lifetime and if (hopefully when) we come back we will look forward to staying at this hotel again. The only minor drawback was limited pressure in the shower, but it wasn't really a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

I stayed in this hotel 3 nights in early sepetember 2011, during a package group tour.

The hotel is located in the university area, about half an hours walk from the Timur mausoleum, a walkable distance for a healthy relatively young person, but maybe not for everyone.

The staff were nice and helpful. Rooms clean and comfortable.
The breakfast was the standard Uzbek buffet breakfast, with limited supply of white bread, no brown bread, chease and salami, boiled eggs, and fresh fruit, (water melon cubes, grapes, apples etc)

Free Wifi in the lobby, you need to try a number of times to access your mail server. Thid seems to be the rule in Uzbekistan.

Quite an average place to stay. The best thing about this hotel is its location, downtown, not far from Gur Emir and Registan. The breakfast was quite poor, there is no restaurant or bar. The staff is friendly but not very clever:)

We stayed at City Hotel in Samarkand in March 2008. The room was OK. No hairdryer (their website indicates there should be one), the phone didn't work, so calling the front desk was impossible.
If you have to stay there, make sure you've got very good earplugs (it's noisy) and be prepared to be overcharged (they don't use the official exchange rate, but their own, 'bazar' rate).
One good thing I can think of- the front desk staff were very nice.
