After the not-so-delightful experience of two nights in Bukhara at a poorly restored former mansion converted into a 'boutique' hotel, and a long bus journey to Samarqand, the City Hotel was a real surprise! It may not be high on hotel 'stars' but it is almost spotlessly clean (that's cause for celebration in much of Central Asia). Rooms are small but comfortable with everything one needs and a large flat screen satellite TV hook-up especially good for those hungry for news or for bizarre music videos from as far afield as Moscow and Tehran or Tehrangeles! Breakfast buffet included a lovely array of safe-to-eat food including a superb omelet and a delicious quince jam worthy of the name of sweet Samarkand.
