“A good step up from a hostel”
Reviewed 20 November 2013

We stayed 3 nights in the Vaia hotel in Hoi An. The hotel has bikes guests can use, offers breakfasts (included) and is a 5 minute walk from the center of the old town.

Compared to the other hotels that we've stayed in in Hue and Hanoi, this one is not quite at the same standard, even though all three were 3-star and similar prices. The rooms are not so big and it's worth noting that there's no elevator (the hotel has 2 floors).

The staff are friendly, especially "Susan" (this is her "English name", not her real name!), and helped us a lot with the planning of our time in Hoi An, however not as pro-active as in other places in Vietnam.

We thought we were far away from the old town, but then we realised that there are actually very few hotels in the old town, so the location is actually really good!

The wi-fi connection was so-so in our room (we sometimes struggled to be able to connect).

Overall we think this hotel is a good step up from a hostel and good value for money but not the best 3 star we've been to in Vietnam.

Room Tip: Rooms on the 1st and 2nd floor are better as they have more natural light, even though you'll ne...

We booked Vaia expecting only a basic and clean hotel room. We were pleasantly surprised that for USD28, the room was artfully decorated, it had modern glass sliding bathroom door, good rain type hot/cold shower, flat screen TV and good wifi connection. Breakfast was basic though - you just have to choose either a huge sandwich, pho (beef/chicken noodles) or cereal fruit bowl. They offer free use of bicycles, free flowing coffee 24/7, cocktails from 4 to 6pm at the lobby cum dining area.

front desk clerk was pleasant enough. although we did not get the room we requested when booking through agoda. check out was ok except that when they checked the room and couldnt find one of the umbrellas, they immediately assumed we had taken it when in fact we did not even use it as we brought our own umbrellas. they eventually found it in the room and was very apologetic. except that damage was done and we were upset that they did not carefully check. in my view, they should never ever accuse a guest without thoroughly checking first - esp when their own staff saw us each time we go out not carrying their huge umbrella. except for this , I would stay again at this hotel if I ever come back to Hoi An.

Room Tip: choose a room in the 2nd floor.

The staff were friendly and helpful. Susan was great!
The room was spacious, clean and well equip, with a nice clean bathroom. The room we were allocated was on the left side - nice and quiet. There are free bicycles
The hotel is close to the old quarter/town but about a 4 km walk to the beach
Breakfast was good with only a western selection
The airport pick up service was a great help

Have a really good stay - loved Hoi An

We had hight hopes for this hotel after reading positive trip advisor reviews but although not terrible there are too many small things that could be improved which would change it from an average hotel to a good one. It's important to note that our review is based on comparison to other Vietnam hotels (after all readers are trying to decide between hotels!) and we feel this hotel isn't bad but fails in important areas where other places stand out. The staff are friendly but hopefully the service will improve in time.
Negatives
1)Rooms are modern and very clean but lack character and the small touches most other Vietnam hotels provide. No bottled water or fruit variety, no soap bar, no pc (many Vietnam 2/3 star hotels we stayed in included pc's which is excellent if you don't have an iPad etc., extra pillows provided but no pillow cases. The walls and doors are paper thin and you can hear everything in the corridor. The front street facing rooms hear the noise from the main street as the hotel is located on a main busy road. If you prefer a quiet room then DONT BOOK THE FAMILY OR DELUXE ROOM as these are street facing and very noisy. The deluxe is no different to the standard room other than it contains a bath and is slightly larger. The standard rooms at the back don't hear the street noise but do hear the corridor noise but it is bearable is you're not a light sleeper. Mini bar fridge was on the lowest setting and the drinks were warm and not very enjoyable when we came in from the humid heat.
2) Customer service is average, the reception staff are friendly and try to be helpful but are not overly enthusiastic and you need to follow things up with them otherwise they may forgot your enquiry. We made two enquiries and on both occasion's they forgot to get back to us and when they did they gave us limited info and we had to ask them if they could call places etc. The receptionist needed to look for the porter twice, one time he was talking with someone across the road! Staff at other Vietnam hotels are more attentive and anticipate your needs and go out of their way to ensure you enjoy your stay. We actually felt like we were putting staff out when we asked questions.
3)Payment - The hotel website stipulates credit card is okay but when we arrived we were told the machine was not working and that it may work the next day. After reading other trip advisor reviews it appears the hotel never takes c/c payment and they use the 'machine not working' excuse frequently. It would be nice if they were upfront when we checked in and also removed the statement from their website if they don't allow c/c payment. There is an atm across the road but it was locked for our 3 day stay.
4)Breakfast - Worst breakfast in all of Vietnam! No buffet which is standard in most Vietnam hotels these days, you order your eggs but the meal is a ridiculously small portion. They provide dry toast, one over cooked egg and a piece of lettuce and tomato. The juice is not freshly squeezed like other hotels. You will also need to ask for butter, salt and pepper if you require these as they forget to put these on the table. The breakfast area is located in the reception foyer facing the main road. It isn't the most comfortable or relaxing environment for breakfast as people are entering and exiting the reception as you eat.
5)Bikes - These are free (if available the receptionist tells us even though there seem to be lot's of bikes!) They also advise us if the bikes are stolen then you need to pay for them. The bikes do have a lock and key however make sure you check the lock is working correctly before you leave the hotel because the lock on one of our bikes became stuck when we were 20 minutes away on a ride and it took us 10 frustrating minutes to get it to unlock before we could continue riding after taking a walk on the beach.
Positives
1)Location is great. Very close to old city, only a 5 or 10 minute walk. Only issue is it's located on a main road and not set very far back from the pavement.
2)Check in was straight forward and reservation was in order.
3)Room was comfortable and clean.
4)Staff friendly (although service not efficient as stated above).
Overall improvements could be made to get this hotel up to the grade of other similar priced places.

Room Tip: Back rooms don't hear the street noise but do hear corridor noise i.e talking, door closing. Fro...

Another great hotel in Vietnam that makes your stay special. Stayed a week here and was always great to come back to after a day out. Convenient location to the old town, free bikes, good breakfast and very comfortable and modern rooms. All staff lovely and friendly and well managed at the front desk by Susan.
