I entered this place mainly to escape the heat of the street and spent an entertaining ten minutes or so being informed about the house and the ancestors of my 70-something year old guide. It's worth popping in for a quick look.

The old merchant house has stood the test of time and has been in the same family for seven generations. There are a number of photographs on the wall that show the generational owners hob-nobbling with various famous (?) entities such as Ho Chi Min, Vietnamese Generals, etc.
The furniture is old and heavy and the house is traditional Vietnamese. It appears that nothing has changed and the house has not actually been lived in for some time. It appears to be just a museum now. Worth a look and wander around but not outstanding.

Tan Ky Old House is one of the four old houses you will find inside the Old Town. You need to show your ticket at the entrance.

I have been to the Old House of Phung Hung a number of times, hence, I find Tan Ky Old House rather underwhelming. Just a quick 5-minute tour is all you need here.

It was nice to see an ancient house still occupied by the same family that has lived here for generations. However, after charging you to get in, you are assigned a guide who gives you a standard and rather indifferent introduction to the house. Then she takes you upstairs to an embroidery workshop where you are induced to buy something. (I bought an embroidered handkerchief that's actually quite nice for $1.50, but I felt pressured.) After that, you are allowed to walk around by yourself. That may be the best part. After exploring the upstairs, be sure to go into the rooms and courtyards at the back. It's definitely worth a visit, but don't expect too much.

Lovely, authentic and traditional house. You can buy a tourist ticket in Hoi An to visit any 5 attractions (about £3 each). Tan Ky's house, and others, are a fairly quick visit, but definitely worth a look.
