“Good value hotel friendly accommodating staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 February 2011

Firstly it is true what they say about the staff! All of them were bundles of joy asking you if you needed help and always more then happy to assist with recommendations with tours, excursions, places to eat etc.

I found it funny that other reviewers have commented that the girls remembering their name was too much? I think it was a nice personalised touch and think you just can't please everyone!

Check in was smooth and we were given a large room on the third floor. The room was a good size, clean and also had it's own desktop pc with Internet which was very convenient for checking bookings etc.

It's located a 10 minute or so walk to the old town and there are a cafes and amenities such as DVD pharmacy on the main road a one hundred metres or so from the hotel.

Breakfast does not contain a massive variety but has your usual Asian staples  which seemed to in rotation such as fried rice/noodles and beef noodle soup it also had an egg station. We had an earl flight out to Hanoi and they were happy to start breakfast from 6:15 instead of the usual 6:30 to accommodate us!

It's safe to say Hai Au Hotel has some of the best staff we met during our Vietnam travels. Especially reception girl Sally was like our PA - super friendly and helpful, no matter what we asked her. They seem to know everyone's name and always greet you with a wide smile. Thumbs up!

Pros:
* spacious, clean rooms beautifully decorated with rose petals and towel origami swans
* quiet rooms with little balconies
* super yummy buffet breakfast included
* just 10 minutes' walk from the Old Town
* best staff ever (yes, I have to say it again :))
* excellent value for money (we paid $35 for a double room)
* free computers with internet in lobby which always seem to be available

Cons:
* pool area is a bit shabby

Very friendly staff at this hotel. They organized free shuttle from the bus which was really nice after the horrid overnight bus experience from Nha Trang. They also helped us book the Red Bridge Cooking Course in advance.

$35.00 got us a large double room with bathtub, fridge, TV and balcony. Free fruit in the fridge which is a nice touch. Pool if it is warm enough.
Huge beds but a little hard and the usual street noise in Vietnam so we had to have A/C on even though it was not really cold.
Breakfast buffet with coffee/tea, juices, fruit, breads, eggs and several local dishes.

A few blocks into Old Town but not far.

The location is ok (10mns from the old area). The surroundings are not that nice. There is a lot of traffic on the Cua Dai Street and there is a karaoké called Eden (can be noisy sometimes) close to the hotel.

The rooms are spacious with a small balcony, the bed are quite big and comfortable and in the bathroom you may have a bathtub but...

The rooms are really plain : in concrete with little decoration (Back to the 70's) and due to the concrete really noisy. When someone turns is TV on at 5:30am you may hear him. For information, no heater in winter but it wasn't necessary. The swimming pool is normal.

The hotel is average (a bit overpriced - 35$ / double) but it is true that the staff is really nice (of course they would like you to buy a tour ... but they were not pushy) and what I really appreciate was the breakfast buffet (everyday a different choice of dishes and quality was fair). So you may decide to sleep there, just do not expect too much from the rooms and take some earplugs.

PS. The wifi signal is really good.

We recently stayed at Hai Au Hotel in Hoi An and thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. The staff at the front desk were fantastic and really helpful, and even arranged a birthday cake for me when they realised it was my birthday which was a really nice touch.

The rooms themselves are basic and clean, and the hotel is located close to the Central Market and Hoi An Ancient Town (about 10 minutes walk). Overall, it's probably one of the best value options to stay in Hoi An.

The staff here are truely friendly. Every morning and every night I am greeted with a "Hello Michael", and a beaming smile. The staff are able to organise anything that you need : Tours, bus tickets, maps etc .... and the prices are always within a dollar of the most bargain options you can find by scouting the tourist shops.

The room i stayed in (3 nights) was beautiful. Arrived to see the bed was littered with rose petals, and a bowl of complimentary fruit on the bedside table. I have my own computer in the room with unlimited access, a balcony with a good view, just minutes to the ancient town (tailors, architecture etc ....) and the room is light, clean, quiet and pretty much perfect.

I am paying $30 a night, which I know is about double the cheapest you can get so close to the old twon, but hey - I booked it on line before i knew what the going rate could be. You might be able to rock up and bargain it down to $20 but for me it's worth what I am paying.

The breakfast is not as extensive as other places i have stayed at but they have Pho, Ommelettes made to order, baguettes, fruit, coffee and some other pastries etc.

I will be staying here everytime I come to Hoi An (After having two suits, a winter jacket, 3 funky pairs of pants, 5 beatiful work shirts and two pair of shoes made for less than $400 I might just come back every year !!)

M.

All in the all an ok stay, but I wouldn't recommend to a friend. I guess it's all about expectations and given the glowing reviews here, I did expect a bit more. I should note that five-star accommodations in Hoi An are not likely to feel comparable to five-star accommodations in Hanoi or any other big city. It's a small town, it doesn't have boutique hotels and most places here seem to have some age them and feel less than cosmopolitan. But even bearing that in mind, I found this hotel less comfortable and more run down than expected other reviews implied.

Our room, bathroom and the restaurant definitely had signs of if significant wear- broken furnishing, dirty and worn out caulk in bathroom, only large fluorescent overhead lights. Additionally, the beds were quite hard, sheets scratchy and the pillows perfumed with a heavy scent --- all of which coupled with significant street noise (mopeds on busy street, blaring radio from nearby building) beginning at 4am made it hard to get a good night's sleep.

Having arrived late in the evening the first night, we opted to eat had the hotel's restaurant. We were the only ones there. The food ( a simple beef pho and vegetarian fried rice) was less than appetizing and went uneaten. Fortunately, the breakfast buffet include in the room fee proved better.$35 a night is a mid-range price for Hoi An, but he hotel felt budget.

On the plus side, staff was very friendly and the there was plenty of hot water in the shower.
