“A very warm welcome and truely meaningful experience”
Reviewed 3 April 2012

We have not long returned to Australia, but I feel remiss that I could not write this review earlier. Our small family of three (including our 24 yr old daughter) stayed in a family villa nearest to the fantastic new pool from 1-8 March 2012. We arrived at Danang on the late flight from Da Lat but because we had booked for 7 nights we received a free pick up by private car from the airport to Betel. When we arrived at the homestay, as we were returning guests (this was our second visit - our first was in November, 2011), we were so warmly greeted by the family and presented with a very beautiful bouquet of flowers byTuan on behalf of our host, Ms Le because she was unable to be there to welcome us herself! This was such a lovely guesture and so unexpected. As if this wasn't enough, on the day of our departure our host, Ms Le and Ms Hien presented our family with a gift of three gorgeous Vietnamese laquered serving dishes .... again just so thoughtful, unexpected and memorable. The photographs and other reviewers have so perfectly described the lush landscaped gardens, the tranquil atmosphere, the beautiful songbirds, the character of the villas, the free bicycles, the new pool and wonderful service and so there's nothing else that I can really add to those reviews - every word is true! We also dined at the invitation of our host and with fellow guests in the outdoor restaurant on traditional Vietnamese food on two occasions during our stay and the food was way up there with the best anywhere on our four week trip around Vietnam! We were so carefully attended throughout our stay by Tuan, Dong, Vang, Hien, Vinh, An and not forgetting, Thanh the cook that we just felt like part of the family. I hope I have got all your names right, spelt them correctly (and not missed anyone) and I want to say a very warm thankyou to all of you for making our second visit even more memorable than our first. I must make a special mention of Ms Vang who handled our booking and our enquiries in such a friendly and efficient manner. Ms Vang also arranged for a fellow guest to deliver my medication to our hotel in Hue when it was left behind due to a very hasty departure for the airport at 4.00 am as a result of an alarm malfunction. We were in Sapa when I discovered the loss and after exchanging emails with Ms Vang the delivery to Hue, the next stop on our itinerary was all arranged. What fantastic service and even though I offered to pay for a courier, there was no need. I should mention that even though we had to leave so early in the morning to catch a 6.00 am flight to Hanoi, Ms Le insisted on rising to bid us farewell along with Tuan who help us pile into the taxi with our luggage. If you are visiting Hoi An, please stay here you will not regret it. The homestay is only a short level walk of about 20 minutes to the Hoi An ancient town and it is just lovely to be staying with and amongst the locals. A true and meaningful Vietnamese experience to reflect upon for a very long time to come!

We were met from the Airport and welcomed with a cool drink and plenty of local information. We stayed in 2 different types of room they were both set in lovely lush gardens and of very typical vietnamise decor, which had more character than facilities such as you would find in 4 - 5 star hotels. This is more than compensated for by value and absolutely outstanding service. We were invited to eat with the family and other guests and they couldn't be more friendly or generous with both their local knowledge, drinks and food. We ventured out on their excellent bikes for a short ride. We checked out and missed saying goodbye to everyone who made our visit so welcoming. So we would like to express our many thanks for making our stay so memorable and a very fond Goodbye to all the family and staff at the Betel Garden Homestay.

Staying in a family home was a new experience for us, and we arrived late, full of trepidation. How welcome they made us! Our room was, in fact, one of several private bungalows, set in the most beautiful, lush gardens, and a tranquil infinity pool, again stylishly landscaped, completed the fairytale setting. Breakfasts were delicious, served outside, where we were serenaded by song birds. One evening, we were invited to join our hosts and their other guests for a traditional Vietnamese dinner under the stars. Wow!! Money could not buy that experience. We smiled the whole time we were there. Efficient, organised and friendly. Top marks!

We loved our stay at Betel Garden. The garden is beautiful a very nice retreat from the tourist filled city of Hoi An. We walked to town everyday ( a relaxed 20 min. walk) through local neighbourhoods which offered a look at daily life in Hoi An. The pool was wonderful and certainly a nice size and very well maintained. The staff were incredible and quickly learned our names and were very helpful with organizing trips etc. We stayed for 3 nights so we were invited to a family dinner with excellent traditional food. It is a homestay, so they have only 8 rooms, so it has very much a family feel, which added to the charm of the place. We were very sad to leave Hoi An and would definitely recommend Betel Garden to those who would like a unique cultural experience.

Room Tip: We had a bungalow and it was a great choice.

we stayed for nine days at Betel Garden and loved it. the grounds are well kept with beautiful flowers and bird cages hanging from the trees. the staff was very friendly and helpful. other reviews were correct in that the rooms were musty smelling, damp feeling sheets and low water pressure. the family invited us to a delicious dinner two nights and we had a great breakfast every morning. a word of warning! be prepared to pay for your stay in cash as the credit card machine does not work. we were asked at the last minute to come up with over $600.00 US cash, which was very inconvenient. we rented a scooter the whole time for only $8.00 a day and it was so much easier and more fun to get around.

Room Tip: get a bungalow

We really enjoyed our stay at Betel Garden Homestay. The staff were very friendly, and we really enjoyed the hosted dinner for hotel guests (great food, good company - lovely!). The rooms were large and comfortable. Free bikes, which was a fun way to explore Hoi An. Only fault is the toilets have very little water pressure so we found ourselves having to fill up the tank with the hose nearby in order to get a good flush. Would stay again.
