It is common for the web presence of a hotel to be, shall we say, a little rose coloured. However, this is not the case for the Vuon Trau Family resort (Betel Garden Homestay). This establishment exceeded our expectations. It is indeed a small (only seven rooms), serene oasis.
The rooms are spacious, clean, and equipped with substantial and high quality furniture. The bathrooms are up to scratch (and large). We booked connecting rooms which was an ideal solution regarding travelling with two young teenage/tweeny girls.
The landscaping is immaculate, shady and welcoming. Instead of a restaurant, tables are scattered in the garden and on patios of the rooms. The food is great. We very much enjoyed the a la carte breakfasts (inclusive with room rate), and also some really high quality lunchs and dinners, which were similar in price to nearby restaurants. The highly cost-effective mini-bar was an occasional life-saver after a hard day at the tailors. We took a cooking class that included shopping at the central market. It was fun as well as instructive. Our family were the only clients that day, so it was personalised to our interests and preferences.
Alice (age 11) : " I learnt lots of new things about Vietnamese food and I found the rice pancakes a bit tricky but I got lots of help from the friendly chef."
This was our first visit to Hoi An, so we were not sure how well the location would work. However, by bike, which was included in room rate, it was a leisurely ride, less than 10 minutes, to the Old Town and 20 minutes to Cua Dai Beach. It is also a short stroll to Cua Dai Road which has no shortage of tourist-oriented businesses, and a short stroll in the other direction to the river. The path along the river is a "scenic route" for getting into town.
The staff are friendly, efficient and chatty, and make the homestay experience different and, for us, better than the standard hotel experience. For example, some staff (Hi Hien!) took the trouble to give us real help with our rudimentary Vietnamese phrases.
We experienced a booking glitch, and the management worked very hard to successfully fix the problem. We had to stay elsewhere for our first few days in Hoi An, but we shifted to Vuon Trau for a seven day stay as soon as we could, and are very pleased that we did.
Finally, the little "freebies" - the laundry service, the previously mentioned bicycles, fresh fruit in the rooms, the family dinner, and even a short river cruise made an already enjoyable experience even more memorable.
