“Booked for 6 nights, stayed for 1”
Reviewed 29 December 2013 via mobile

After a brilliant few days in hoi an we thought we'd get some warmth and sun in phan thiet. We heard some good things about the area and were looking forward to a nice relaxing resort. Unfortunately first impressions last. We walked into reception after 7 hours in the car to a cold unwelcoming environment. They wanted to take our passports for the entire stay for police to check and the safety boxes didn't work. Considering what we were paying, we found the atmosphere to be very dry and bland. It was set in a remote part of the city over the other side making it difficult to get anywhere, the taxi driver had no idea where it was. There were no pamphlets or maps of the area, no services for tourists, the wifi didn't work in the rooms, showers were cold etc. None of the waiters or bartenders knew what they were doing and couldn't understand anything on the menu, we waited 30 minutes for warm beer and food was terrible. Despite all this the only good thing was that the rooms were clean and nice next to the beach, and pool was in a great setting. However we only stayed one night after being booked in for 6 and moved on to greener pastures.

The good..
Beautiful beach, rooms (we stayed in beachfront), swimming pool.
Good service, clean.
The bad..
Restaurant, have been in many 4 star hotels/resorts, but this one was rated around 1 star.
First lunch: we ordered some vegetarian dishes and rice, the veggies arrived, waiting for the rice, waiting, waiting, waiting. When it finally came the rest was cold. Asked why.. they smiled.
Next day breakfast.. no bread, waiting, waiting, waiting, about 10 minutes. I guess the kitchen is about 1 minute walk. When i asked why.. answer.. the cooks are very busy with the lunch (where they should have been very busy with the breakfast i suppose). From the cold cuts 5 were empty (and stayed empty), what was there was the very cheap Vietnamese cuts. I ended up with bread with cheese. Last day i tried breakfast again, 5 staff were standing in the corner, doing nothing, and the cold cuts were empty again. so bread with cheese again.
How to improve the restaurant...
First... fire the F&B manager and get a professional
Second.. Instruct the chef to buy 4 star breakfast ingredients
Third: Retrain the staff
Doing this Sandhills will be a very very good resort.

Last one: i read in one of the reviews a guest was complaining on having the reception knocking on the door on 6:30 am. We had the same, do not know if it was the reception again, but we all woke up because someone was knocking on the door and trying to open it. I sure hope reception knows that at 6:30 am you do not do this, or you have thieves running around the resort.

Sandhills resort and spa

This is really a hotel resort, with nothing around. It has a shuttle bus that runs to Phan Thiet twice a day, 06:00 and 08:20, with return pick up to the hotel at 07:30,12:00, 15:40 and 21:30, so if you decide to go you'll be in Phan Thiet for some time.
As for the hotel, it is in a secluded spot, quiet and peaceful. The grounds are well kept, with a golden sand beach with a lot of shells and broken shells, careful with you feet, however the sea is dirty grey green, and can leave a brown residue on your skin, on occasions it can smell dead fish. There are few sun loungers around, and the mattresses for the loungers are in a state of disrepair. The main pool area is clean and the pool itself is quite good. Towels are supplied, you have to ask for them at the main pool area. There is a second pool area near to the standard rooms, but this pool is out of commission, and no work is being carried out to it during the time that I was here.
The service is slow, on average 30 mins to get something to eat at a lunch time and longer in the evening, even though the restaurant is quiet. English is spoken, but it can be difficult to explain what you want, this makes it extremely difficult for those who don't speak English to be understood. A lot of none English speaking nationalities were present at the hotel when I visited, and were getting a little frustrated by the lack of English understanding.
During my stay the telephone system was not working and the wifi was useless, no connection in the bungalow and no Internet access when connection was made in the restaurant.
There is nothing for children here, no kids club, no kids entertainment, this is not really a child friendly resort, with nothing to do the kids get bored very quickly, and there is nowhere to take them unless you arrange a taxi.
In other 4 star resorts that I have stayed in, there were staff on the beach to oversee the security, and to ask if there was anything they could get you. The beach here there is nothing like that, you want a drink or food you have to go to the main pool area and order and wait for it, not ideal as either you leave all your belongings on the beach, and hope its all there when you return, or you pack it all up and take it with you.
During the wet season June - December you can expect to see a lot of dragonflies and also flys around, though not too much of a problem, it's something to consider before you look to book this hotel.
Food is ok and reasonably priced, similar price and quality to a normal restaurant, though the portion size is quiet large. Drinks on the other hand are over priced, nearly 3 times what you would expect to pay in a convenience store and 4 times that of a supermarket.

Key points
Dirty sea
Old and tired looking beach loungers and mattresses
Poor service
Poor understanding of English
Good pool area

Very friendly staff, good restaurant and buffet breakfast. Quiet location, great beach and will definitely return. Only for those looking for quiet holiday away from it all! Stayed in standard room which was quite large.

Stayed here for 4 nights in a beach front bungalow. Very quiet and peaceful. Food was great and staff were v attentive. Everything was v clean too. My only issue was the music in the restaurant was v loud so spoilt it a bit. But they turned it down when asked. There is not a lot to do in the local town of Phan Thiet but if all you want to do is relax, then this is the place. We loved it!

Bits of this hotel are lovely, other bits are well, not so nice...The pool closest to our room was being filled, and had dead frogs and beer cans in it. The building seemed to be under construction. Our room wasnt ready when we got there so we were offered a welcome drink from a table with an empty jug on it. It took a while to refill, and the room had 2 single beds in it for a 4 person booking (2 and 6 year old children). After a lot of arguing we managed to get a room with a double bed and a pull out bed but we were made to feel like we were being done some great favour.
We ate in the restaurant and found it overpriced and not great. The spring rolls were covered in a strange batter and came with a very strange chilli sauce that looked morelike mari rose sauce.

Room Tip: A villa might be nicer, we stayed in a standard room in the construction site...

We decided to stay for 3 nights and we had a really relaxing time. It's close to Phan Thiet and there are shuttle buses available between the resort and the town. We opted for the 'deluxe ocean view' and the rooms are really big and spacious, also very comfortable and good cable tv. The bathroom was abit dark as the was only one little window and 1 light. Breakfast quite good and goes on til 10am for the late sleepers, can be busy and lots of things ran out.

The bad things I would say is that there are two pools but one is "under maintenance" and sometimes it was busy so it would have been nice to have the two pools.
The other thing, they should only call it 'Sandhills resort' NOT 'Sandhills resort and spa' because the spa is 'under maintence', very overpriced and told to book one day in advance if we wanted a massage.
Also, it seems that bits of the resort are still 'under maintenance'.

The staff were very helpful. Not very well trained, running around most of the time as it looked like they were very understaffed. In the evenings, food took ages so get there early for dinner and if you're hungry! Also to get a nice table spot.
English extremely poor for this kind of resort. Didn't understand when I tried to explain to them the housekeeper had left our room door open by accident and anyone could've taken our things. No apology just kept on asking if our door was broken.
As I said very helpful, maybe too helpful as we were woken up on a few occasions, one time at 6.30am because the receptionist had some information to give us.

Overall we did have a good time but quite overpriced as the standard didn't match the stars.
