“A great place for a family holiday”
Reviewed 21 August 2014

Our family of seven; three generations really enjoyed our stay here. The Farmhouse is spacious and comfortable, food and service were excellent and all staff indulged our demanding grandsons, 5 and 3 with no complaint. The half-hour drive into Livingston often took longer as our driver would stop to allow us to photograph the abundant game by the roadside.

This was our final destination in Zambia, having been in three other camps/lodges. It was a great place to finish. The rooms were very comfortable and very clean (only slight criticism was the lack of chairs - the only place to sit was the bed!). The electric blanket was a surprise (I didn't think that would be needed in Africa!) but was a welcome addition for one of our sons. The safe was very useful as many of the activities we did involved water! The welcome from Himal and Nathan was very informative and although we appreciated being talked through all our activities, a paper copy would have been useful so we didn't forget the timings. The menus and food were all delicious and the staff were very happy to accommodate our 12 yr old fusspot! There are many great activities on offer from Waterberry (including fishing, Vic falls, sunset cruise) and we would strongly recommend the Island picnic (gorgeous lunch on the banks of the Zambezi) and the village trip (a fantastic insight into Zambian village life with Webster - the children were a delight!). A great place to stay.

Room Tip: We had rooms wagtail/Sunbird - two adjoining rooms which was great for our family. Would love to try...

We stayed in the Waterberry River Farmhouse, in the grounds of, but separate from, the Lodge. A four bedroomed house built in the colonial style, on the banks of the Zambezi river, with its own jetty and an infinity swimming pool. After 6 nights of communal living on safari in Botswana (also fantastic), it was wonderful to have the peace and quiet of the farmhouse for 4 nights. While at first I was afraid that we might be a bit isolated, the Lodge staff were very attentive, calling into us, chatting, making sure everything was fine. Our package included one activity per day which was also perfect after the fairly demanding safari schedule! We went to Zambia to see the Victoria Falls but I really fell for the Zambezi river as well, with wildlife across the river in Zimbabwe and hippos roaring at night........and I can't forget the campfire, our own individual fire where we could have a sundown drink and gaze alternately into the log fire then up at the Southern Cross......last but not least was the 4km walk we did with a local Zambian guide to visit 4 villages....his own story as well as his account of village life was impressive and interesting.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for the River Farmhouse.

So welcoming and caring are the staff from the moment you arrive, that you know you will feel at home throughout your stay. Waterberry was highly recommended by our travel agent and we found accomodation, food and general surroundings were perfect for our first visit and stop on the African continent. Great local activities, like visiting 4 villages a little further up river, a sunset cruise seeing and hearing Zimbabwe's wild animals (lion, giraffe and buffalo) on the opposite river bank and of course those shared with Zambia like the visiting hippos! and of course a well organised visit to Victoria Falls, which for us also included the helicopter flight over falls and inside the white water gorges (which we will treasure for as long as we can remember - so try and afford it if you can!).

Room Tip: a personal requirment, I feel, and standard is so high all round that any issues would be addressed...

ACCOMODATION
Beautiful room with comfortable beds and a truly wonderful shower! The room was serviced as expected and evening turndown provided. Rather than hot water bottles, this place had electric blankets. The whole area is absolutely stunning and the grounds are landscaped to perfection. The swimming pool (very cold, but then again, it was winter!) was nicely cared for.

FOOD
Fantastic food here. The breakfast had an amazing choice (the pancakes were delectable). Lunch was absolutely wonderful (really interesting and diverse selection) and dinner had fantastic choice and excellent standard. The service was very personal and we enjoyed this part immensely.

STAFF
All the staff were very attentive and very eager to please. I have never been asked so many times (and I would add, it wasn’t too many times!) whether everything was ok. The managers engaged with all the guests (even playing board games with us) and were extremely accommodating when we pointed out a pricing issue with the transport to Victoria Falls (with 4 of us going, the hotel transport was nearly 3 times the price of a taxi – but they dealt with it in a professional way and it should be noted that they did this without us asking. Wonderful customer service that should be copied in every other hotel worldwide).

OVERALL
The sunset cruise was lovely – very relaxing. This was a bolt-on to our game drives at the end of our holiday and was just a wonderful way to relax at the end of the holiday. I thoroughly recommend it.

Room Tip: All rooms look amazing

A 3 day stopover on the banks of the Zambezi was a perfect break between game camps in Botswana and Luangwa. A slight hiccup about our collection from the Airport was of little consequence - after that everything was as near perfect as you can get. The welcome was good, drinks and activities arranged and our bird watching interest catered for by a proposed trip to the Livingstone sewage treatment ponds - don't laugh, it was very good!
The chalet was superb, only a few metres from the water with a view of the dawn from our bed across the fringing reeds and still river. The Lodge had prepared the room and kept everything neat and tidy, laundry came back promptly, folded and pressed as new. Food was superb. We had just commented that our steak had to be the best we had ever eaten when we overheard another couple at an adjoinig table saying the very same thing. Young Martin in the kitchen was forced to come out and take a bow! The menus were relatively short but skilfully thought out and impeccably presented - though a bit more soup please!
The sunset cruise was wonderful - engines intermittently switched off so we drifted silently with the current so as to see the birds and animals better. The Lodge arranged trips for us and bent over backwards to make sure that we had everything we needed to make our stay as fulfilling as possible. Beds had electric blankets because it is cold at this time of year but we didn't feel the need to use them. The evening charcoal braziers were welcome as was the "campfire" where tales were told and experiences exchanged. Just put on an extra layer!
If you want the buzz of the town and its shops don't stay here - if you want the most beautiful of lush settings beside the Zambezi with comfortable rooms, attentive staff, excellent food and a sense of tranquility that I can still feel...... book now and hope you can find a vacancy.

Room Tip: Each lodge is a picture perfect thatched building. We were fortunate in being given the one set to o...

Just returned from a wonderful 3 day stay at Waterberry (July). Everything about the hotel was perfect. The attentiveness of the staff, the choice and quality of food and wine, the 'nothing is too much trouble' attitude of Amy, Nathan and Charmaine, and of course the hippos on the doorstep! We really enjoyed the daily activities with the extremely knowledgeable guides, but also enjoyed relaxing by the pool. The grounds were lovely and peaceful and we had a good rest. It was a lot quieter and more restful than the busy town hotels we saw in Livingstone, and perfect for what we wanted - we were glad to be out of town and have the peace and quiet of Waterberry. Our room was lovely and clean with a comfortable bed and lots of hot water in the shower and big thick towels. Someone came and put the mosquito nets round each evening and turned the bed down, and we slept very well every night. We also had our washing collected in the morning and returned all smelling nice and ironed in the evening, brilliant service! The staff go to a lot of trouble to make sure you are happy, and the managers work very hard to arrange all the excursions and ensure everything runs smoothly. They also went over and above the norm by putting up with some of our indecisions and helping out with recommendations! Food is served at tables outside and again, this was quiet and peaceful and a lovely experience. Wine was plentiful, and the food certainly filled us up! Lovely selections each day and it's nice that there is a choice of menu, as many lodges just have one menu we found. The bar also makes good mojitos………

I am amazed at the one bad review I have seen further down this page. How you can complain about 'bugs' in a riverside lodge in tropical Africa I have no idea! And to make such a fuss and leave to go somewhere else, then call the Lodge the next day and beg to come back - hilarious! We found the Lodge to be beautifully clean and tidy, our room was spick and span, and we enjoyed seeing the little geckos and other creatures around, as well as Humphrey the Hippo in the evening enjoying his dinner in the garden. We don't get to see these things in England so it was lovely. We encountered these as well as the 'flattie' spiders in all the lodges we stayed during our 2 weeks in Zambia, so I am unsure what these other guests were expecting. Do not believe this review - and read all the other positive ones! I would not hesitate to recommend Waterberry to anyone, and whilst it's listed as a 4 star lodge I don't think it's far off 5 star . We have stayed in a lot of hotels over the years and we had such a lovely time at Waterberry. ( I suppose the only minor improvement that I could think of would be thicker, darker curtains, but it doesn't get light until 6am so not a major hardship!). A wonderful trip and thank you to all the staff for their hard work giving us such a lovely holiday.
