“Wowee Bucket List Scary and Brilliant”
Reviewed 23 March 2014 via mobile

Do it, do it, do it. What an experience, you're right there in the edge and you come away feeling on top of the world. Experienced guides take you to all the spots allowed depending on the season and height of the water flow. March being high season the water flow is at it's near highest so the current is strong. You are guided right onto the top of the falls edge and get to sit in the gurgling water fall which is a mighty thunder only steps away. Was simply thrilling

“Adrenalin Rush in The African Jacuzzi”
Reviewed 12 March 2014

Doing this in March when the water levels are high and the falls in full force depends on if you are normal, brave or down-right crazy (translated to 'stupid'). I guess you know which category yours truly falls under.

Entering from the Zimbabwe side - you will need your passport depending on if your nationality requires to produce a passport.
The passport process doesn't take long. Your Shearwater Adventures driver also assists you with the process.

My view of the adrenalin factor of the slide over the Batoka Gorge soon got dispelled by the outing to the African Jacuzzi. The Devil's Pool is off-limits due to the water levels as well as the sheer force and power of flow of the Zambezi River. If you want to specifically do the Devil's Pool then you need to book at a time that it is possible (check with Shearwater Adventures).

I suggest you already put on your swimming costume under a top and shorts. Wear slip slops or walk bare-feet. I found that going barefoot was more comfortable and gives more tread. The mud will spoil nice shoes/sandals. If you have forgotten to put on your swimsuit the staff at reception is kind enough that you can dress in the ladies room or you will be given an opportunity to change once on the other side. Shearwater Adventures also provide towels and even the 'Toilet With A View'. Due to the spray and rains - you get a rain coat as well. Ensure your camera is under the rain coat. The guide at some points will take your picture.

Departing from the landing at The Livingstone Hotel - we were taken by an engine powered boat to the African Jacuzzi. The well experienced skipper skillfully steered the boat to our disembarking location. One could see the tell-tale signs of the strong current. We were just several meters from the edge of the falls.

After about a 30 - 50 meter trek through the bush one is welcomed by the breakfast area (a table laid out with necessary cutlery covered by a tent, but not spoiling the view of the topside of the falls) that is visible through the trees.

Donned in raincoats - the adrenaline started pumping. One can opt to cross some of the stream and rock to get to the edge of the fall. Don't be fooled by the beauty of the flowing water. Adhere carefully to the guide's instructions and tread where indicated to. This ensures you get to the next step safely. The water flow was very strong. The guide is skillful and is with you every step of the way to ensure your safety. The view is worth the crossing to see the falls from another angle.

From there you cross back to go to the African Jacuzzi and to see David Livingstone's memorial plaque that is at the 'top of the steps' down to the Jacuzzi. This is where the fun starts. We were only 3 in the group of which 2 decided to venture into the pool. The guide helps each individual towards the pool and checks that all are happy and comfortable.

What an amazing experience! Scary, but amazing with a dash of 300% pure adrenalin. From there one sees the Falls at a different angle.

On the way to the reception of Livingstone Hotel I saw a giraffe. Be prepared for that impromptu photo of an animal appearing out of nowhere.

Thumbs up to Shearwater Adventures for great service from pick-up to drop off.

If you like the adrenaline rush - then this is for you.

“Expensive, but worth it”
Reviewed 9 March 2014

It is a truly unique experience to sit in the water at the very edge of the falls. We usually don't spend at this level, but so glad we made an exception this time. Devil's Pool was closed because of high water, so we actually used Angel pool but even so it was a great experience.

“Dangerous when raining....”
Reviewed 28 February 2014

We booked a day trip on Livingstone Island via our hostel (Jollyboys). The trip included a trip to Devil's Pool, which was dangerous in December at the beginning of rainy season. Our guides took risk they shouldn't have and had folks who were not strong swimmers get into high fast moving water during the rain. Make sure your trip doesn't include rain as the pool fills up fast and the guides do their best to keep you safe but still questionable when raining.

“Not as scary as you might think”
Reviewed 22 February 2014

My friend wanted to do this and after watching videos on youtube I had decided that I wasn't interested. It looked too frightening for a weak swimmer. Eventually I changed my mind and I'm glad I did because it wasn't challenging at all.

This tour is very well run and the guides ensure that you are safe at all times. You will want to wear water shoes for the swim / walk to the pool. It is over rough terrain and there were a few bumps and bruises but nothing serious. the swim portion is very short and the current in that area isn't very strong. There isn't any wildlife to worry about inthe water because they are all smart enough to stay away from the edge of the falls.

There is a guide with you at all times. Someone holds your feet when you hang over the falls so there is no fear at all. They take lots of pictures for you and are very friendly.

When it is over you get to enjoy a really great meal before the boat ride back to the hotel.
