My friend and I are currently spending a few weeks backpacking around Zambia and Malawi...we only arrived at Livingstone Backpackers during the early hours of this morning but the service and facilities are exceptional and have compelled me to write this review. We are not your conventional 'early twenties backpackers'...admittedly we are only in our late twenties, but found that Lusaka backpackers caters for a wide age range. Facilities range depending on price, our first night in a double en suite room was that of a 4 star hotel and our next night will be spent in a twin room with shared bathroom, which although basic is exceptionally clean and well furnished. We were greeted at 0330 by a helpful member of staff who kindly showed us to our room and explained the working of the hostel. The following morning, a wide selection of breakfast options were available and staff happily helped us with our activity reservations. I would highly recommend this hostel....in summary.....clean, well equipped and fun without being in your face!

Arrived here in early evening after a problem getting a room with a different backpackers, and thank goodness we did. We got a four bed dorm to ourselves (wee bonus) for $12USD pp/night and it's perfectly located near the main road.

We were able to walk around and get dinner for a great price at a local after dark. Felt completely safe and at home. (Livingstone is really chilled out). The facilities are well cared for, there is a great atmospheric bar, pool area, plenty of lounge room and outdoor kitchen and braii.

The staff are very friendly and helpful - overheard them booking multiple excursions for other guests first thing this morning. Stan is particularly friendly and cool! Reasonable prices for rooms, food and drinks.

If you're looking for quiet, ask for a room near reception.

Definitely recommend.

After a terrible experience at jollyboys we came to Livingstone backpackers and were immediately impressed. The staff gave us a tour of the facility and were very welcoming. The pool is beautiful and very clean. The dorm rooms are small but a huge plus was the lock boxes in the room!

I stayed only one night because other accommodation was full. The garden and the atmosphere is cool, however there is lots of room for improvement of the rooms, cleanliness and accommodation in general. First of all they need to fix mosquito nets on the widows and for the beds and to improve other things .... otherwise location in Livingstone is good.

Owned by a British lady, Dawn and the property is quite good. Not too much noise during my 2 night stay. This was not my first choice however when I called the accomodation where I am going to stay I was told its roomful and can't take no more. I was about to go to the terminal already for Livingstone from Lusaka and that was early in the morning so I immediately search the net for places to stay while in Livingstone and called the number. It was 6am and Dawn answered and mentioned she has room and its 60 kwacha for a 4 dorm bed. Premises clean and greenery. I got the dorm room all by myself. It was clean and although the bathroom and toilet were shared however its separate male and female use. No mosquitos to bite so no worries on that department. There is a kitchen that guest has the liberty to use. No free wifi though must pay 10 kwacha for an hour use. There is a swimming pool and bar was cozy. Easy Landmarks after the Livingstone museum there is a Total petrol station and must turn on that road and about 100m or so is the backpackers; the premise's gate shaded by a Huge tree. To add its free Drop off to Vic falls just mention it to reception.

This place is decent for young folks on a tight budget. The grounds are relaxing, with a pool and lounge chairs and periodic events, like Monday night movie nights, though it's a bit grungier than the other options in Livingstone. The communal bathrooms were cleaner than most hostel bathrooms, and the rooms were quite clean, except for the mosquitoes. The staff was quite helpful too.

Our biggest frustration was that there was no wifi available during our stay. Though internet access is listed as included on Hostelworld, it's not - they charge around US$2 per hour, in the unlikely event that it's available at all. Initially a staff member said it was because it was Sunday, and there's no wifi on Sunday. !@#? Then it was because cable office wasn't opened yet on Monday morning. Then they were out of vouchers for the rest of our stay. Wifi was included at the other backpackers lodges.

Second, the mosquitoes. The hotel grounds have more mosquitoes than we saw anywhere else in the Victoria Falls area, and the rooms don't have window screens or mosquito nets for the bed, so prepare yourself to be eaten.

Third, the airport shuttle only picks up from the airport, no drop-off, even though the listing says it includes airport transfers.

And finally, the walk-in price for a double was half the price of hostelworld ($10 per person, vs. $20 online). At the walk-in price, it was a pretty good value, but you get what you pay for. Fawlty Towers and Jollyboy's have nicer pools and grounds, more (and cheaper!) activities on offer, restaurants on site, and more. A restaurant on site for dinner would be especially nice because Livingstone Backpackers is on a dark back alley that feels dodgy after dark.

I stayed here for two months and it was my home away from home- the staff were wonderful and made me feel so comfortable. Bar was always a fun time and the pool is perfect for a bit of pool volleyball :) such a great location- walking distance to shops, restaurants, bars & town. I can't wait to come back! Would recommend this place to anyone!
