“So full of Mosquitos - dangerously high amount of Mozzies!!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 August 2013

We were booked here for 2 nights (24 & 25 Aug) as Livingstone was fully booked due to the UNWTC conference. While the staff are very most helpful and friendly, particularly Darios and Alice in Reception and the food was fairly good, the Chalets really need to be upgraded, the rockwall showers (aka 1970) are seriously outdated and not attractive even if they are supposed to look like the Vic Falls!!! Good bed linen and towels and the rooms were clean, but the roof netting on the thatched roofs of the chalets are not sealed so thousands of mosquito's and insects freely enter your room. However, we have never ever seen anywhere so infested with mozzies, there were so many (I mean Trillions!!) They were all over the reception area, the bar, the pool area, bathrooms etc- we sprayed our rooms to the point of choking on the fumes, had 2 incense coils burning and a citonella oil burner and it had very little effect, there were just too many mozzies!! ANd even with Nets over the beds they got in and ate us!! We live in northern Zambia and deal with Malaria all the time, meaning we spray our houses and yards properly with a strong recognised repellant, the Bushfront say they are spraying but, they could not be doing it properly to have that many mozzies. It is also dry season in Zambia, so any stagnant water around the perimeter should be dry, they are not spraying regularly, and it will be a miracle if we don't all come down with Malaria, even though we are taking profolatic's. The mozzies are living in the thatch roofs, gardens, walls - it was a nightmare, and then we got into our car, OMG I have never seen so many come out of a small space in my life, there was a carpet of dead mozzies just in our spare wheel, after we sprayed and our passengers were eaten on the drive back to Lusaka as we just couldn't kill them all. If we could have found another lodge free we would have moved, and it is unlikely that we will go to this lodge again as there are far better available.

I also was offered this as the Waterfront was fully booked and, having visited the Waterfront, was very happy to be at the Bushfront. Although the food is nothing to write home about it is perfectly adequate and the service is excellent, very friendly and observant. Sitting around the fire pit outside with a few other guests after dinner to share experiences of the activities of the day, while listening to the night sounds is a great part of the experience. You may have to ask for it to be lit.

I have just been at the end of the rainy season and the mosquitos are no worse than most other African destinations, normal precautions are fine. The traditional structure of the cabins makes them airy and cool and there are fans and mosquito nets.

The staff are happy to book activities for you but the Waterfront is only a 10-15min walk away and it is easier to make arrangements direct instead of repeated phone calls, especially if a single traveller as most need a minimum of two and so some times you have to change plans.

All in all, a very good base to enjoy the many activities available in the area.

We stayed here on the campsite:

The staff on reception, at the bar and in the restaurant were very freindly and helpful, the ablutions were possibly some of the best we've seen in 5 months in southern africa, the bar was very cheap, the restaurant very expensive, slow and the food poor quality. The swimming pool is very small.

The biggest drawback to this place is the fact that it is right next to a swamp - as oon as the sun sets the air is literally filled with insects, most of them large hungry mosquitoes. This made it impossible to remain outside, even behind mosquito nets and screens, the sheer quantity of them made sure that some managed to get through! The worst nights sleep in southern africa for us!

Bushfront Lodge is a lovely quiet lodge just outside of Livingstone. We chose it because of others' reviews and were not disappointed. It only has a small amount of chalets which are well spaced out amongst trees and the central restaurant/bar/pool area is really the only other focus of the place. There is a campsite down the drive, but is quite a distance from the lodge itself and no-one was there at the time. The staff are friendly and helpful and although we had water problems the first night, we were compensated with complimentary drinks at the bar! The full breakfast was enough to keep us going until dinner and the lunch/dinner menu was perfectly adequate. My only suggestion would be to have self service tea and coffee available during the day. For our stay this was a quiet spot, peaceful and restful, away from the 'loud crowd'.

A very nice place to stay. The lodge was very quiet, the staff was very helpful. The restaurant had very good food although a limited selection. It was a great place to relax. It is not far from town and the falls. A real treat for tired travelers.

We stayed 3 nights, 4 adults and 6 children most of our visit we were the only guests which was great for the children who had the pool to themselves - it is very small.
The lodges are lovely with amazing showers that are styled like a waterfall with the water falling off stones. The bar pool and restaurant area are pleasent and make sure that you ask for some fires going on the cold evenings they are great.
The food was satisfactory, though there was little choice.
This lodge is a sister site to Waterfrount a couple of km away, we did think that it would have been useful to have a courtsey transfer service between the two sites as we had to go there to book activities as the staff at Bushfront suprisingly did not have much knowledge. We also found that they had internet access and a superior setting on the river. Bushfrount was more suitable for us a large group, but I would think that a couple or single person would be better at Waterfront.

We had originally wanted to stay at the Waterfront Lodge but they were overbooked so were offered this as a replacement and what positive result. Whilst only having a small amount of units the service was fantastic. We felt at home from our arrival until we reluctantly left. We visited our original choice an found that to be a lot more commercial and considerably noisier. I think we had the best result.

Room Tip: If you are not going off on trips from the hotel, take plenty of books to read by the poolside
