“Paradise in Africa. Jungle junction , Bovu Island”
Reviewed 4 August 2013

Idyllically situated in the middle of the great Zambezi River about 1.5 hours from Livingstone and the mighty Victoria Falls. Brett will collect you in one of his mid 1980s Landcruizers , filled with Mosi beer, water and other supplies plus a few other passengers. His first question " you want to sit on the back?" Rather squeeze into the front for an enjoyable drive. Don't hire a car or taxi as the sandy road is only navigable by 4x4.
Transport to the Island from the river bank can only be done on a Mokorro, so pile in and experience Africa.
Superb cooking by Mama Alice ( baby Alice is another story.....ask Brett), this tranquil haven is the place to go and relax, canoe around, do sunset trips, if you want action, Tiger fishing is an option, or tour the local villages.
The crocs and hippos are close and not always visible but can be heard. Fish eagles and a host of other birds are plentiful.
You may bump into Evelyn Roe, botanist and author extraordinaire , one of the few other residents of Bovu.
So, if you're in Livingstone and surrounds, a few days at Jungle Junction should be on your schedule and at US$60 per day per couple it's got to be the best value around.

Room Tip: Chalet 3 is River facing and very private, but then again, the who.e island is super private.

Where to start? Jungle Junction is situated pretty much in the middle of nowhere, about an hours drive (half on dirt roads) and a short canoe trip from Livingstone, Zambia. It is situated on Bovu Island on the river Zambezi. It is like no other place you will stay, of that you can be sure. The staff there are simply superb (even Brett!), and can not do enough to help you out. You would think we'd have been bored after 4 days on an island with limited electricity, no Internet and no shops, bars etc., but it was quite the opposite. If we didn't have a flight we would most probably have stayed a few more days. Davey, who pretty much acted as our personal guide for the week, kept us busy with sunset cruises, fishing trips, visits to the local schools and clinic and more. I think on our last day we chilled and read a book and let Davey get on with helping out the community by working on the local school that Jungle Junction have set up. Besides, from the bar you can spot hippos, crocs, elephants and loads of species of birds, so that's an activity on its own! Mama Alice, who runs the kitchen, is great and willingly let us use her kitchen for the week to self-cater, which made it cheaper. On hindsight we should have tried some of her meals as they seemed to be good! Our favourite thing about JJ was the showers, which were dreamy - an abundance of hot water in the open air heated by a wood fire, wow! In terms of a remote, authentic, tropical paradise, Jungle Junction has it spot-on. There is nothing I can fault them for - best of luck for the future guys :)

Room Tip: I would recommend the enclosed rooms (not fisherman huts) for those who would like a barrier between...

Jungle Junction is paradise on earth. Brett and Eveline are lovely people, as well as all people from the staff. We got an upgrade - being the only people on the island when arriving. We were planned to stay with our tent, but got a big hut and fishermens hut for all nights. Food is good, showers are hot, surroundings are beautiful and activities were great to do: we went out fishing, got on the sunset cruise twice and visited the local village and school. The only thing you should worry about, is not to stick in the bar too late, it might end up being a late one... :-)

Jungle Junction was the perfect place to commence our Zambian/Botswana/Zim holiday. We had no choice but to collapse into a hammock and relax and unwind. The simple yet clean and comfortable accommodation was very good value for money and Mama Alice's food was abundant and tasty, although the breakfasts were a tad pricey (especially the cereal/toast option). The outdoor showers (heated by a fire) were definitely the best showers we experienced throughout our trip. The highlight was the 9.5lb tiger fish that our friend caught on his early morning fishing expedition with Brett. The staff were great and we thoroughly enjoyed the sunset cruise in the dugout canoes! The island was exactly as we imagined it from reading the informative web site. Definitely worth a visit!

My friends wanted to go here because they wanted to fish for tiger fish. It ended up being the highlight of my trip. The simplicity was magic. The food spectacular, the atmosphere relaxing and company wonderful and fascinating. Mama Alice,Baby Alice,Flex, Davie, Godfrey and Brett...better than any first class hotel. I hope to return and take a number of girlfriends with me. Sure its rustic but totally relaxing and a total experience. Wow!! Getting to know the folks in the village was a wonderful experience too!!!!
Go... You will not be sorry unless you're looking for the Four Seasons.

This is a pristine island with the most basic amenities that allows total relaxation. I must admit I was a little disappointed when I stepped on the island and saw the rustic nature of the fishman's hut. The owner was great and told me he was sorry I was unhappy and I could leave the next day with a full refund.

His great attitude made me open my mind to the whole place and I ended up totally enjoying the beauty of the place, the attitude of the owners, the ethnic nature of the tribe that runs the place and the company of other persons looking for a get away.

The food was above average, but a little overpriced. If you are open to cooking a few meals yourself, bring your own food to save a few more bucks.

Loved the swimming hole and the fishing.

Would highly recommend this place again.

To say we wish we had stayed longer is an understatement. The two nights that my 14 year old son and I stayed were magical. Brett and all the guides and Sister Dee made this a very special relaxing place to be. This waste first time my 14 year old had ever been to Africa and he has told me that he not only wants to go back to catch that elusive tiger fish that our guide Brighton tried so hard to help him catch but he has said he would like to live just like Brett on an Island in the middle of the Zambezi where he can fish all day, swim in the Zambezi and lay in a hammock and chill. Thank you so much Brett and team, rest assured we will be back. Thank you x
