We arrived in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe after a three week hot and dusty safari through South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. We had heard about the Royal Livingstone Express and decided to book it. We were collected by taxi from our hotel and driven across the border to Livingstone in Zambia. Boarding the steam driven train we were transported back in time with liveried waiters in carriages reminiscent of the Orient Express. Drinks (anything we wanted) and canapes accompanied our trip to the Victoria Falls Bridge which we had earlier crossed by taxi. Pausing on the bridge we watched the sunset over the largest waterfall in the world (in terms of volume falling at one time!!) and headed back into Zambia for a six course meal worthy of Michelin ranking. Taxi back to Zimbabwe completed the memorable evening.

A really nice evening in a lovely enviornment. Excellent food and service. Yes, the locomotive is actually a steam engine and we were allowed up into the cab of the engine for a moment when we stopped. What fun!

Imagine the scene .. a steam train puffing it's way along the track, sumptuous pullman carriages, attentive liveried waiters, a stunning five course meal and the wine flowing ... then add in a stop on the famous bridge for a view of the falls and a monetary step into Zimbabwe ... what could be more magical!!

This train was only running Saturday and Wednesday nights when we were in Livingstone. It's an entertaining night out. You learn a lot about the history of the rail road whilst wining and dining. We had a 5 course set menu meal, so lots to eat. One set price and water, soft drinks and wine included.

I was really double minded about this activity. The cost is big deterrent and it keeps the tourist away.I guess they need to charge to justify running this stream engine but different rates for local Zambians and neighbouring countries will bring more customers.
Anyway for Easter they reduced the price to $168 pp and its same for adults and kids which again is not really tourist friendly practise. For teetotalers and vegetarians like us its even hard to spend that sort of money when there out four of us 2 are kids....anyway I had booked online and negotiated price with Livingstone Adventure but even that did not match the Easter price they were offering....felt rather cheated.
The train is luxurious with nice sofas ,curtains and carpeted. The waitress were attentive and served welcome drink and kept on coming for refills to the people who were drinking wine etc.The train faced some startup snags and went forward backward couple of time. Now there is really nothing to see outside, its just the feel.It does stop for 20 minutes at bridge but as we had already visited the bridge,it didn't hold any attraction to us.
The chef on being told that we are vegetarians made sure she serve some veg dishes to us as main course which we appreciated very much. The food is very nice 5 course one but really hard on stomach .
One enjoys the feeling of those unhurried days of luxury ,relishing well cooked food .
