Mukuni Village
More attraction details
Attraction details
Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: Walk in Dr. David Livingstone's footsteps and sit under the "Meeting Place" tree where he and the Mukuni people met as they helped him find his way to discover Victoria Falls. Experience and discover the day to day traditional village life of the warm and vibrant Mukuni Village people from housing, agriculture, education and family through a cultural and historical tour. Here you'll find incredible, handmade arts and crafts that support fair trade and the people in the Historic Mukuni Village in Livingstone, Zambia. Getting to Mukuni Village is a simple 10-20 minute drive from most local resorts and Victoria Falls. While most every cab, taxi or livery driver know the location of the historic and traditional Mukuni Village, those who are new to the area or visiting should contact us to confirm driving directions. From Victoria Falls, on Livingstone Way / Mosi-Oa Tunya, head East on the road opposite The Royal Livingstone and Zambezi Sun Resorts. Follow it to Mukuni Rd and continue heading East onto Mukuni Rd. Where the road ends in front of an enormous mango tree, Chief Mukuni's Palace, the African Craft Market and where the Cultural Tours begin.

see my other review under Victoria Falls...but this did provide insight into traditional rural living conditions. But I did find the market touristy, fake and pushy.

“Worked in Mukuni Village for 2 weeks”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 March 2012

I was lucky enough to work in Mukuni village for 2 weeks with the locals.

I saw a number of tourists whilst I was there and think the trip provides a good insight into a true African Village.

Yes the locals want to sell you their products, but they are not really pushy and will take no for an answer. They are friendly towards tourists and I would definitely recommend a visit.

“Opportunity to glimpse village life”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 November 2011

After previous visits to villages, (by no means touristy) in other parts of Africa, such as in Burkina or Guinea Bissau, Mukuni does afford visitors a glimpse of village life. Of course the locals want to sell their handicrafts, (some of which make useful gifts - and always at prices comfortably below those of shops and airport boutiques - provided you bargain a bit), but people are friendly, not too pushy and the village is surprisingly natural, in an attractive setting, and by no means over-exploited.
