“The potential is there, but they don't quite get it right.”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

Firstly, on the positive side, the chalets are lovely with nice colors chosen for paints and all the things one likes to have on hand (coffee/tea making facilities, safe, mozzie nets and fan) provided. Also, the location of Maramba is good, being between the Falls and Livingstone. And the common areas are attractive with the bar and restaurant being especially well-placed on the river.

But on the negative side the restaurant was empty of diners each evening and so is rather depressing. The dinner menu is very limited with service starting at 7pm--too late for those with young children. With an updated and appealing menu and some enthusiasm I feel that the restaurant could pull in people from town and other lodges with its lovely deck and view of the Maramba River. As it is now, though, it appears most people go into town for meals.

Towels provided in the chalets were inadequate-- two small towels for two people. While I know water is always an issue, as is laundry, if lodges up in South and North Luangwa can manage more towels then Maramba certainly should be able to.

The breakfast service was atrocious. The first day no one came by at all. I eventually scrounged a muffin and some cheese on my own from a pretty empty buffet, but no cooked breakfast was offered, or even a "Good Morning", for that matter. The second day I managed to get the attention of a waitron, but she was not good at her job. She didn't bring half of our order or provide things like jam or butter although other tables seemed to have them.

I feel that with staff training Maramaba River Lodge could really be a great place to stay in Livingstone. Some staff already get it; our chalet was very nicely cleaned each day and the bartenders were uniformly good. But as a whole the lodge doesn't seem to be putting its best foot forward. I hope this can change.

For a unique rustic experience select lodging inside the Mosi Tunya National Park in Livingstone, Zambia. This property overlooks the Maramba River four miles from Victoria Falls in one direction and Livingstone the other. Guests have a variety of accommodations to choose from including permanent chalets and tents. We stayed in a chalet and although it was comfortable, it was very basic.

The nicest part about the lodge was the dining room and the pool/bar area alongside the river. The complimentary breakfast was basic, service was slow and meals were not memorable other than for the view of wildlife across the river. Crocodiles and a variety of birds could be seen as well as lovely sunsets.

The activity center was headquarters for information on neighboring attractions. If you didn't feel like doing anything, you still could have a nice experience sitting by the rock pool observing the elephant and baboons that meandered through the property.

We were very disappointed with our stay at Maramba River Lodge. I had booked a chalet room a few weeks prior to our stay via email and had received confirmation, however when I called up the day we were due to arrive to say we would be arriving late they had no recollection of our booking. Fortunately there was a chalet available. The chalet itself was very run down and needed a lot of work. Patches of plaster were exposed with paint peeling off the walls and there were marks on the floor. In the bathroom, the shower head spurted water out straight on to the wall opposite, rather than downwards - not exactly ideal when you want a good shower! The water did not drain properly so you ended you standing in a small bath by the end of it. Considering we arrived at 9.30pm, the mosquito net was not down around the bed and there was no complimentary water in the room. Considering you are paying $200 for a chalet room this is the least you would expect and we had experienced this at every other place we stayed on our trip to Africa this year, apart from at Maramba River Lodge. The chalet was not completely sealed off from outside so we had all sorts of bugs and mosquitos in our room that night. Alongside the bright light which shone outside the door to light up the pathway (no curtain over the window in the door), we did not have a very good nights sleep. The owners need to heavily plough some money into this place and re-do the rooms if they are to continue charging such high rates.

Following our nice camping in Botswana we spent 2 nights in Livingstone, Maramba River Lodge to visit again Victoria Falls. Our experience was good, most probable because we also managed our expectation. We found the lodge good and good value for money because it was quiet, no crowd, the garden and environment was nice and natural, the pool was clean and comfortable, the rooms were enough to stay and the beds were good to sleep, were clean, staff were helpful and friendly, the barman was kind, open to prepare alcohol free cocktail for the kids. The view from the bar /pool as well as restaurant was really nice, we could enjoy the visit of elephant, crocodile as well as some nice birds, including a nesting red billed fire finch pair. The lodge location is good, few minutes drive to Livingstone as well as to the Victoria falls, however you had to drive about 4 km, but we expected and prepared to do so. Breakfast and the dinner was good, tasty, only comment is that the service could be faster, maybe these days were a bit of short of staff. Our overall experience was good, good value for money. Yes, the service, rooms most probable cannot compare to the top hotels of Livingstone, but when I saw the crowd (and price) of them, I'm happy that we selected Maramba Lodge.

Room Tip: We had good experience staying in the rooms # 1 - 4,

Although the hotel served a good breakfast, it was the only hotel we have stayed at that didnt provide complimentary drinking water in the room. And although mosquito nets were provided, there were a lot of mosquitoes within the space enclosed by the net, probably because the mosquitoes hid under the bed during the day. There was also no facility to change US dollars for local currency at the reception whereas most other hotels we stayed at has this facility. So we had to go to town to do this and a round trip to town cost 20 US dollars even tho the town was only 5 minutes away.

We stayed in a chalet, which is the most exclusive alternative at the lodge. We had a family room with a double bed and a bunk bed for the kids. The chalets are stand alone with a small veranda. There are dark green mosquito nets instead of windows. The decor is very tired and dark, the walls have cracks in the them and carpets were old and stained. Bathroom was cleaned, but tired too.

The beds themselves were pretty awful and needed to be replaced. I kept falling into the "hole" in the middle of the bed made by thousands (?) of guests before me.

The restaurant has a nice location. Food was OK - we only had lunch and breakfast there. The pool and bar area is very nice. Pool is clean and nice and is made to look like a natural waterhole. The bar is nice, facing the river and is visited by both hotel guests and locals when we were there.

Service in the reception was very willing, but unfortunately not very knowledgeable. The entire staff didn't have access to a computer so it was difficult for them to find phone numbers to restaurants etc.

Maramba Lodge is best thought of for backpackers and those who can handle a few nights roughing it. We were booked into Chalets, but on arrival were given tents. After showing my booking form, we were given chalets, must to relief all round. Breakfast is very basic, as is the accommodation. Flat pillows and worn mattresses. If you are forced to eat supper there, sorry for you. We found much of the food inedible. The place is cheap, so you get what you pay for.
