“Feel like a home”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

I am Roberta,I was traveling alone in many place inAfrica and in Bulawayo I stayed in Sondela. The place is amazing. A big and comfortable house, with good bedrooms. I feel like in my home.
But the best thing about this place is the people, Rodney and Prudence help me with all things in Bulawayo. The food was very good and the price is very accessible. All is very cleaning. I recommend Sondela in Bulawayo.

Sondela Guest House was my home for 2 months while I consulted on a agriculture development project in the region. Rodney is welcoming, attentive and always up for an adventure. Prudence is a lovely manager who is willing to help direct you for anything you may need. Grace feeds your soul and Julia ensures you are looking sharp everyday. The house is quirky and has an old world feel that makes you feel so relaxed and at home. It is a garden haven where all of your work troubles melt away. When I return to Zimbabwe, I will be sure to stay at Sondela again.

Room Tip: The White Room has a beautiful view of the garden but a bit more noise from the road. The Suite has...

We recently spent the night in Bulawayo and had been advised to stay at Sondela - how right that advice was. Rod welcomed us and could not have been more charming and attentive. His advice for dinner at the Shangri-La Chinese restaurant over the road was spot on, and his home was graceful, and well appointed family home. Breakfast was great - we will definitely be back

After a wonderful week in Cape Town and a 4 days round trip to Hwange National Park and Victoria Falls during Christmas, we came to Sondela to relax and enjoy the two last days of our vacation before returning home to Norway. We were warmheartedly welcomed already before we started our trip to Hwange, as the friendly owner, Rod, let us store most of our suitcases in the guesthouse to avoid filling the trunk of our rental cars. We were also asked if we wanted dinner when we returned four days later, and wow, the homemade roast chicken tasted deliciously! We really felt at home, we (a family of 9) "occupied" the TV room, the snooker table, the couches and the bar, and we really enjoyed the lovely ambience and the company of Rod and Kirsten, their family members and the rest of the staff. Our last day in Bulawayo was spent by the lovely pool, sun chairs, mattresses and pool towels were immediately provided and early in the morning of December 30th, Kirsten and Rod were up before dawn to drive all of us to the bus station in the city centre where the Pathfinder Coach was ready to take us to Harare. To make the waiting time before the plane departure In Harare less boring, Rod called a hotel and arranged that we could have a late lunch and rest in the hotel garden instead of waiting 8 hours at the airport. THANK YOU so much for making our stay unforgettable, and we wish you all the best for the business in 2014. Sondela Guesthouse is highly recommended! Kind regards on behalf of the Roerstad Family from Norway, Oddrun Roerstad

We travelled to sondela in Dec13 for some business opportunity spotting, stayed with Rod and Prudence at Sondela and were not disappointed. The rooms were first class and very olde worldy with real old african/colonial style.Though we ate out a couple of nights the meals were also excellent and the ambience, with an honesty bar, made you feel really special and a house guest rather than a hotel guest.
Every wish is taken care of and the attentiveness is first class - not remotely overbearing!
Thanks for loan of the hat - it made my days much more comfortable.
We will be back !

I visited Bulawayo early this October for a few days for some family roots touring. I had never been and didn't know what to expect -- Rodney, who runs Sondela, picked up up from the airport, and from that point on looked after me like one of his own.

Meals are magnificent, fresh and tasty, often prepared from the bounty of Sondela's veggie gardens and egg-laying hens, and can be enjoyed with company or without. The honesty bar is a brilliant gathering place to chat with whoever else is staying over, or to spin or listen to a yarn with Rodney.

And the resident tortoises are the icing on the cake. They come to Rodney's deck every morning for a feed.

Rodney's expert team at Sondela ensure that everyone's every whim is taken care of, and he himself is wealth of knowledge on the city, the area and the country.

Sondela Lodge embodies what staying at guesthouses is all about. I will be back, with time to soak up the grounds, and relax by the pool...

We travel to Bulawayo from Harare almost every 2-3 months for motorcycle racing. We must have passed by Leopold Takawira Avenue 20 times and each time we wanted to see what Sondela was all about. The opportunity came when we needed a secured place to stay and for our motorcycles.

We booked direct with the guesthouse at sondela@netconnect.co,zw or cell +263 772 321 131 (Prudence). The prices are standard: US$110 for double and US$80 for single – all on B&B. The prices are even sign-boarded on the gate.

From the moment we entered the gate to the moment we left, we were treated like first class guests! The guesthouse was not full when we checked in so Rod the owner took us around to choose our preferred rooms from a choice of 6 old world charm bedrooms. We chose the quietest room in the house (without TV). There are tea/coffee making facilities in each room. At bed time, we found sweets on our pillows and a carafe of drinking water on the side.

Breakfast is the typical Full English Breakfast, plenty and hearty. The ladies made sure we had our flask filled with piping hot coffee for our day at the track and when we had to depart early for Harare, we found a take away bags of sandwiches, oranges, juice, yogurt and our flask all filled with coffee. Wow!

We didn’t dine in but decided to visit our usual restaurants in Bulawayo; 26 on Park and The Bistro at Bulawayo Club (we gave New Orleans a missed this time). The other guests seemed to have enjoyed themselves with the ladies’ cooking.

The garden is beautiful (even just after winter and everybody knows about he lack of water in Bulawayo), with matured gum tress, swimming pool and beautiful flowers and bushes, plenty of birds.

There is free wifi throughout Sondela and it is far far better than what we get in Harare.

Rod is an excellent host, always polite, never pushy, and always full of the Zimbabwean mantra of “We’ll make a plan”.

All in all, we enjoyed our stay and felt well treated. And will surely recommend this place to our friends and – we’ll be back!
