I was pleased to see that Zimbabwe has not wiped away all the old colonial historical artifacts and information. The displays are clear and very spacious.
The animal and natural exhibits really help to expand your knowledge of just how many species live around here!

The Natural History Museum is a 'must see' on a visit to Bulawayo. The exhibits are extensive and very well presented. I recommend that you use a guide to get the most from the exhibits. Depends on individual concentration levels, but a good guided tour will take you between 2-3 hours. The NHM has been well maintained and upgrades and new exhibits are regularly undertaken. The exhibits are well presented and informative. Zimbabwe has an extensive variety of animals and birdlife and many of these are on display.

One of the best natural history museums in southern Africa. Visiting the museum is a little like stepping back in time, as some of the exhibitions are a little dated, but there is a wealth of information about Zimbabwe and its history. A great visit to complement a tour through the country! The little cafe in the basement serves a few simple meals.

We visited this museum with four children (ages from 9 to 12) and both the adults and children all thoroughly enjoyed the informative and well laid out displays. Although, it is obvious that not much has been added to the collections recently, this does not detract from the experience and, while, the interior is rather dated it is clean and well cared for. A good idea to visit this museum before going to the Matopos/Matobos Reserve and other historical sites as there is good info on the pre-colonial and colonial history of the immediate area. The museum's website is also worth looking at.

It is interesting to see that overseas visitors find the 10USD entry fee for adults (5USD for children) expensive - for South Africans this is excessive! I hope National Museums & Monuments of Zimbabwe changes it's policy on charging more to non-resident tourists as the excessive fees are a disincentive to visit this and other sites.

It wasn't the best museum I have seen but the display on the second floor regarding the history of Zimbabwe was helpful in understanding how a country's history can shape people's attitudes toward outsiders.
