“Not the best choice for family vacation at south beach of Aqaba”
Reviewed 21 August 2012

I am currently staying at this hotel. The hotel is not utilizing it's potential in comparison to near by hotels. The interior design is very poor and looks old. The rooms are not quit functional and no elevators. The pool side is very noisy with loud speakers all day long. The beach is far and no golf carts even for families with small kids or old people. The staff is very friendly but the service is quit poor. We asked for boiled water to prepare milk for the child and the hotel wanted to charge us for half a letter of boiled tap water. Not even a complementary bottle of water!! Over all it is rated as 4 star hotel but definitely it's leveled 3.stars at max in my opinion it is not value for money especially in high season

We stayed here in April as a group of four (two couples) for a few nights. Great hotel that's situated in a newly built up area of apartments, holiday homes, hotels and restaurants/bars. Hotel is about 10 minutes walk from the beach and provides clean beach towels every day.

Rooms are pretty basic but clean and tidy and not far from the main restaurant and swimming pool. The staff were friendly but not hugely aware of time, we spent 30 minutes waiting for clean towels when we were desperate to get to the beach but they were apologetic and sincere about the delay.

Breakfast was incredible. I have never seen the amount of good quality selection available, from continental to cold meats to fresh fruit & omelettes. There were freshly baked pastries and a good supply of tea and coffee served to your table.

Swimming pool was pretty small and crammed with kids but this wasn't a problem as we spent most of the time down on the beach.

Great stay, just added to our amazing time in Jordan. One of the best holidays I've ever had.

Room Tip: All the rooms seemed pretty well located and spacious.

The staff were really friendly some of them had actually remembered me from last year when i went with my family, so that was nice.. The shuttle bus from the city to the hotel is great and very convenient as the hotel is about 15 minutes away from downtown. The Spa manager was great, he had encouraged almost every one to participate in the aqua gym and had an amazing music for it... pool volley ball and ping pong were great too.. (though they need to buy a new rackets and a new table too :)

First! To my Hungarian friends: do not expect luxury & all inclusive in Jordan! Do not compare with other countires. They are not prepaired for this, but it is enough...
BUT: The hotel staff is very friendly, helpful with Hungarians, some of them speak our language! :)
The hotel is in very good location at Tala Bay. Better then in Aqaba!
The beach in Aqaba is very small and not private! Marina has big private beach with swimming pool! The rooms are clean, the food is good, half board is well enough!
Every dinner has someting special local food!
I really liked in the hotel, they have the local Jordan food, not the "international pizza [--]".
The main pool in the hotel is crowded by the locals especially in Friday-to-Sunday, BUT the Beach is empty! You know why? The people can not swim there! They are afraid of water! It was funny to see. :-)
So my tip: go directly to the beach, you will find lot of free space, out of crowd!
If you want snorkerling, and see more, go to the right on the beach side about 600-800 meters, till you reach the free beach. The corals are there... Wear swimming shoes!
We really enjoyed our holiday, there's a free shuttle bus to Aqaba center. It is enough to go in 2-3 times. Nothing much to see and do there, except shopping at bazaars. (avoid chineese market).
The Marina is a good place to relax. Go to trips to Petra, Dead See etc...

Room Tip: If you want a relaxing and quiet room, ask for NOT poolside.

INADEQUATE ROOM SIZE AND LACK OF HONESTY IN RESERVATION. By e-mail, not internet, we had reserved a room for three people (parents and adult daughter), and they put us in a room where with an extra cot that left no ability to walk in, out, or to the bathroom. When we protested, they said all rooms are the same size (they aren't). The desk clerk did his absolute best to solve the problem, and we purchased a second room, and both rooms were bigger than the first one.
NON-FUNCTIONING KEYS. The hotel staff had to spend a lot of time trying to get our keys to work. The batteries to the room doors weren't working. It was a big deal to get them working. Eventually, we got one workable key (out of three) functioning for each of our two rooms.
NO MEANINGFUL BEACH ACCESS. You want to go to the beach from this "beach hotel"? Get a towel. Start walking through parking lots, past cars and through various barriers. Eventually, you will find it -- on the property of the next door Radisson. Beach itself is minimal, and has no connection to the hotel other than a bar where you can buy drinks. Strange to have a hotel next to the beach with no beach access, or even a marked path to the one next door, but there it is.
IGNORANT BAR STAFF. Sorry to be so rude, but did you know that a "martini" is a drink that consists solely of vermouth? And that you will be charged for two drinks if you ask that it include gin and only a touch of vermouth? And that the bartender will fill it with vermouth anyway, throw in the 1/3 of a shot left of the gin, shrug, and then be offended when you complain that it is (a) undrinkable, (b) not a martini, (c) does not contain a full shot of gin, and that (d) you don't charge for two drinks when a person orders a single martini? By the way, be prepared to wait 20 minutes or more for the drink to arrive at all. I only knew the martini did not contain a full shot of gin because after waiting and waiting, I went to the bar to find out if there was a problem. Then I witnessed the bartender pour the 'short' shot and shrug rather than open a new bottle to provide a full shot.
FOOD SERVICE. Hard to get anyone's attention, and slow, slow, slow. Understaffed.
FOOD QUALITY. Buffet food, quality is mediocre - Radisson next door is marginally better. Notably, Marina Plaza has a policy of forbidding anyone to bring in food from elsewhere. It's a further sign of attitude towards its clients. The guards don't actually enforce it although they are supposed to. I explained that I went next door because the food at the Marina Plaza was bad.
POSITIVES. Internet worked, is free for all, and faster than is typical in hotels in Jordan. Desk clerks really try to solve problems and work hard. Our car was not damaged while it was valet parked. Watching people doing aquatic exercises in the pool to pop music was amusing, especially since many were covered in aquatic abayas, some with great yellow or blue racing strips. It's probably a nice place for people from nearby Saudi with young kids who like swimming pools.
SUMMARY. If you want a resort experience, next door Radisson is infinitely preferable, it's a quality hotel. A better choice for many would be slightly roughing it at any of the snorkeling hotels south of Aqaba city, such as Bedouin Garden Village, Moon Beach, and so on, where you will pay 1/4 to 1/5 the price for rooms about as adequate as the the Marina Plaza.

Room Tip: Do not believe staff if they tell you all rooms are the same size. They aren't. If you have more...

Egypt-cel, Manager at Marina Plaza Hotel Tala Bay, responded to this review, 23 July 2012
Dear valued Guest,

Many thanks for your TripAdvisor Review. We appreciate both negative and positive comments from our guests as this enables us to continually review our service standards.
I am sorry to hear that we failed to meet your expectations during your holiday and I hope we can answer some of the issues below.
We apologize for your disappointment on the room size and we do offer the extra cot only for small children. I do understand however that this might be inconvenient due to the size of the room.
The key card problem appears sometimes because of the technical issues, which we are working on it and I apologies that it was not solved from the first place.
We dearly regret of the misunderstanding with the barmen as the martini cocktail is not on our drink list therefore he is unaware of the right proportions of this cocktail. As it is not on our list, he charged for 2 single alcoholic beverages and after your complain, our manager has removed this double charge from your bill.
Our restaurant buffet is usually praised by most of our guest and I regret you found it mediocre. i will pass your remarks to our team. However I would not agree to compare our 4 star hotel with a nearby 5 star resort which is also more expensive.
I would also like to thank you for all your positive comments regarding some other facilities and services.

the talabay website (talabay.jo) gave me three options. based on the pictures; this one was the best but in reality this one was (by far) the worst, in fact , this hotel was one of the worst hotels i have ever used for vacation .
1. the reception is terrible, i entered the hotel and tried to checkin and i thought i was in the flee market, the process was horrible .

2. i picked a sea view and the room was dirty and very very very bad quality , i would rather sleep in my car . showers were old and the overall room condition was less than 1 star, they are not even on the beach and they are selling a sea view rooms. (bad marketing).

3. the pools are small and not enough for the amount of visitors and there is no service what so ever.
4. service was horrible. the resturant lacked everything , the spa was awfull and the gym was so small, no clubs nor entertainment.

5. the people servicing you (security , bell boys, reception..etc) were rude , they have no proper training and they look scary in most cases.

i have sooo much to say about this hotel but take my advise and VOID unless you get it for free and even then you might need to think about it.

good luck

Room Tip: they lie about most of the things they offer so do trust anything they tell you...

We stayed at the Marina Plazza Hotel in May at the end of our trip to Jordan. Our room overlooked the marina, was clean, nicely furnished, very comfortable, and had a large and bright bathroom, a mini bar and good Air Con. We arrived several hours in advance of the 3pm check in, dirty and tired from our stay in Wadi Rum but were immediately shown to our room. Other reviewers have mentioned their likes/dislikes of the interconnecting rooms but we were not connected to anyone, so 'solo' rooms are most certainly available. The pool area was nice, clean and well maintained, with two adult pools and a small pool for children, a towel service, bar and nice snacks. There was also a good selection of easy to reach restaurants and shops within the larger Tala Bay complex. The hotel provided a very good spread at breakfast but we did not eat any other meals at the hotel, preferring to go into Aqaba. There is a shuttle bus service into town, which is a fair distance away. You needed to book your slot on the bus and were then allocated a return slot 3 hours later, which we found a bit inflexible, but if there were spaces on a returning bus, they would let you on, otherwise there were plenty of taxi's around.

The hotel is not on the beach but it was only a short walk around the marina to get there. Overall we found the staff helpful and friendly, although they would not make a local phone call for us when we were having trouble with language barriers. The pool staff were quite persistent in their attempts to sell us their variuos excursions and it became a bit irritating after a while.

In all, it was a very nice place to unwind after a pretty exhausting trip around the country but I was ready to leave after the second night, because of the resort-style impersonal nature of the whole Tala Bay area - you could have been anywhere. However the Marina Plaza hotel was much cheaper than the other resorts within the complex and was very good value. Tala Bay is a stand alone resort area on the main highway to Saudi and there is nothing much within walking distance to see or do beyond the confines of the resort. It was well worth escaping to Aquba, which had a real buzz about it with plenty of nice places to eat, good 'duty free' shops and a big market. We headed for the Aqaba region for the diving but the hotel trips were not really what we wanted and were fairly expensive. I would advise others to research the many diving providers in the area and book in advance of their arrival.
