“Very delicious”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 April 2014

This is really the best eel I had so far. Very crispy on the surface and the fish meat was so fresh and tender. The look is like roasted pork in HK. When we arrived at the restaurant, there was a long queue. But we didn't wait for a long time. The waitress there was very nice. Although she couldn't speak English, she tried her best to explain to me the set that I ordered may be too big portion for me.

“Unique, traditional Nagoya eel experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 February 2014

We wandered into this small restaurant near Sakae, and were treated to delicious eel on a bed of rice. We were patiently shown the three ways to eat the eel, finishing with pouring a kind of miso sauce over it. Fabulous!
The restuarant only seats about eight people on bar stools at the long bar, where you can watch your food being prepared.
The staff were brilliant!
Two portions of eel, with two draught beers, total 5200 yen. Great value! (NB - it closes at 10.00 p.m.)

“A Rare Treat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 December 2013

One can get unagi on rice at many Japanese restaurants around the world. But then, there's Maruya Honten. We arrived about 20 mins before opening time on a Saturday and found ourselves about eighty deep in a queue of mainly locals on a day out with their families. People were politely ushered to their tables when the doors opened at 11am but we had to wait another 30 min until the first round finished their meal. By then, the queue built up even more but everyone waited patiently.

The wait was worth it as the eel dish turned out to be simply excellent. It was grilled to perfection and we literally wiped our bowls clean. The sauce was not too salty unlike some other unagi restaurants and we tried all three methods of eating, Nagoya style! Service was friendly and attentive. Overall, the meal was relatively pricey but you get a good serving of expensive unagi. It was a rare treat and no wonder why locals lined up to get their fix here.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 September 2013 via mobile

This is the best Japanese eel rice ever! You must gonna miss it if you tried once! Even my friend is not willing to eat fish, he live this so much! Crispy BBQ eel, full of the bowl, the taste if the sauce is just perfect, not too sweet but tasty enough~ there are few method to eat the eel rice, of course the original method is the best, that's just eat them! We missed it so much, that's why we went to the Chubu airport earlier to eat again there~ I must go back to Nagoya again for this eel rice!
