I stayed at this hotel twice during my two week visit to Japan in Novemebr of 2008 at the beginning and end of my trip and found the staff courteous and kind and treated me almost as a family member which was very nice as this was my first time in Japan and I was also traveling solo the hotel itself is nearby Nagoya Station and very easy to find the rooms where large and the bed was comfortable with two free bottles of water though if you needed anything there was a 24 hour Lawson Convience Store next to the hotel when i visit Japan again i will stay at this hotel.

This is our second time returning to Nagoya Sofitel. I chose this hotel because it is very convenient from the rail station, just 5 mins walk from "Sakura dori" exit from the station. If unsure, enquire at the tourist info centre, they have english speaking staff and free maps. The hotel is very easy to find.
The size of the room was good but the carpet was dirty (stained) in our room, it seems the hotel is a bit run down. But we were only there for one night, so we didn't complain.
The hotel staffs at the reception do not speak much english but the waiter in the restaurant did! We were also given a welcome drink each (any drinks on the menu in the restaurant under 300 yen).
Overall it was a pleasant stay.

We arrived in Nagoya on a wet rainy day. Eventhough the hotel was located near the JR station we took a cab to the hotel. We arrived at about 11am but were not allowed to check in until 2pm. We borrowed umbrellas from reception and walked to the JR station where there are departmental stores and many restaurants. Returned to the hotel and checked in at 2pm and were given a non smoking room located on the 10th floor. Our room was small with a queen size bed. You cannot move around the room with your luggage open. Luckily the room was nicely decorated and the toilet amenities provided was L' Occitane. Our rates included breakfast which was very good. They even have fresh japanese melons. We stayed for only 2 nights and was leaving for Takayama before arriving in Osaka at the end of the week. We were able to forward our 2 luggage through a delivery service to our hotel in Osaka. On the whole we enjoyed our stay at the Sofitel but was disappointed with the size of the room as well as the check in time.

We were a family of four adults and we stayed one night in two interconnecting rooms. Each room has two (largish) single beds, a bathroom with separate vanity area and a large desk/ work area. There is an interconnecting door between the two rooms just past the main entry door.

It is really close to Nagoya train station so access to the subway and to the Shinkansen trains is easy. We managed to walk with all of our luggage from the airport train - when you arrive up at street level walk north past the Nagoya Central terminal, past the car park and bus terminal and then you will see the blue neon hotel sign to the right about 100 meters up the street at the next intersection. Nevertheless the hotel is far enough away for it to be really quiet.

Of course, in Japan everything is just that little bit smaller and little bit lower than most Westerners are used to. The top of the beds are at approximately knee height and the bathroom sink is not that much higher! However the beds were very comfortable and the hotel provides slippers, a nightshirt, a toothbrush, toothpaste and a disposable razor.

We arrived at nearly 10:00pm after a long flight so didn't get the chance to sample the restaurant. However there is a large convenience store about 100 meters down the street which has plenty of options for bread, milk, snacks etc.

The room comes with ADSL internet but it costs Y1000 per night.

The only downside is that the interconnecting rooms are NOT smoke free. The hotel offered to move us to other non-smoking rooms but it was important for us to have the interconnecting room so we persevered. Apart from the smell of smoke the room was spotless. Also, watch out for the metal doors and doorframes - they make a racket when they close.

In Japan they take a copy of photo id when you check in so that takes a little time. Otherwise the front desk staff were courteous and efficient and were pleased to provide a late check out of 4pm.

We are members of the Accor Favourite Guest programme so got a great discount to stay there. No other hotels in the area could provide an interconnecting room so if that's what you're looking for the Sofitel is a great option. We will definately stay there again.

  • Liked — Large room, proximity to transport but quiet
  • Disliked — Interconecting rooms are not non smoking

This hotel was very conveniently located to the station, though we took a taxi on arrival for convenience. (Do have the name of any hotel in Japan written in Japanese, because cab drivers rarely seem to know much English outside Tokyo. ) The front office staff couldn't have been nicer, booking us at two different restaurants - both from Lonely Planet - that one could tell they thought might be disappointing because of their lower prices. ( They weren't!)They knew about a pretty cheap "gold" municipal bus pass that took us to all the main attractions.... esp the Toyota Museum and Noritake ( china) complex. They also told us how to find the fabulous Meiji era artchitecture musem, which we reached easily via train and bus. ( the FL Wright Imperial Hotel lobby there is worth the visit, and the place in Spring with azaelas blooming is gorgeous and a real respite)The hotel breakfast (included) was very good - and featured fresh strawberries ( in season) which we appreciated. The room was definitely cozy and well appointed, but not large by US standards.

  • Liked — very calm, pleasant place with excellent service
  • Disliked — exterior architectire
