“A Friendly budget Ryokan”
Reviewed 24 May 2013

It is the small friendly hotel in the quiet area on the hillside of the Takayama. Only a few blocks from the tourist attraction. If you are lucky and get the room in the front side of the hotel, you will enjoy the great view of the whole Takayama city.
Very friendly reception and willing to help you with all kind of things. The hotel is on the small hill so I don't recommend for the elderly people here.
The hotel overall is a bit run down and need some maintenance. Since they serve food for both breakfast and dinner, the food smell is everywhere .... in the corridor and get inside the room too.

Room Tip: Get the room in the front side of the hotel, you will enjoy the great view of the whole Takayama cit...

Nestled on a hill, this ryokan has a commanding view of Takayama. A 10-minute walk to town, about 20 minutes to the train station, and a lovely few minute walk to the Jinya morning market. Although on the tired side, I highly recommend staying a few nights here. The Japanese breakfasts on both days were superb and plentiful. Our room had an anteroom where was served. The bedroom was big enough to fit 3 futons, which was very comfortable. The best part, however, was the bath. It had a tub filled with water from the hot spring and with a wonderful view. The hot soak was the perfect way to end the day. Our very own private bath. It also has an open bath although I never set foot in hence unable to give feedback.

We have just stayed three nights at Hakuun Ryokan. Found the owners to be friendly and helpful. The breakfast menu was varied automatically each day and on day three we were surprised with a western breakfast. We were the only ones in the dining room on that day with the western breakfast and we could hear comments from other diners wondering how come we had western style and they were getting Japanese. Whilst we had no desire for western brekkie, we were impressed with the fact that the effort was made in the kitchen to create a whole different type of meal to all the other diners. All the food served each day was fresh and delicious and there were two lovely older japanese women who attended to everyones needs effortlessly.
The room was a traditional japanese room with tatami matting on the floors and futons layed out in the evening for sleeping. Set high on a hill, there are views for all and we also made use of the private onsen which was fun and very affordable at 1000 yen for an hour. The ryokan is slightly on the tired side with a little wear and tear showing, but still clean and ok. One staff member had quite good english having worked in Cairns, Australia for nine months. A shuttle is run by the ryokan to the train station twice a day, otherwise an easy twenty minute walk. The rest of the town is close by, about 5-15 mins walk. All in all. a quite reasonable and enjoyable stay. We would be happy enough to stay there again. ( The true test. )

The view of the Ryokan is fantastic! From the room, we had view over the mountains and Takayama.
It takes about 20/25 minutes walk from the train station, so they offer a transfer from the train station from 15h to 18h and in the morning from the Ryokan to town until 10h.
The room was decorated japanese traditional style. It was large, with balcony, japanese style bathtub and sitting room.
They have a private Onsen as well. As we didn't have the opportunity to go to an Onsen in the Mountains it was really great to use it!
The breakfast is Japanese style, but I saw a couple having western style breakfast, so I suppose that is available...
The staff was also really great, always nice and very polite.

The only things we didn't like was that the breakfast is taken quite early: option between 7.30 and 8h. But that turned out to be good, as it sort of forced us to enjoy more hours of daylight as well.

Also, the check-in is a little late (15h) and the check-out at 10h, but I noticed that most of the Japanese hotels have this sort of schedule for check-in/check-out...

We had a wonderful time at Hakuun it was the highlight of our trip to Japan. We stayed two nights. The people were very helpful and the food was just wonderful. The accommodations were superb as it was a classic Japanese inn with a few modern conveniences (mostly private bathroom related). The location to the interesting parts of Takayama was great as it was about a 10 minute walk to the cultural highlights (government house and merchant's street). We also took advantage of reserving the private outdoor Onsen for one hour.
