“A Memorable Onsen Experience”
Reviewed 5 August 2013

Our home for 2 nights, Hirayu No Mori, is conveniently located just across the bus terminal. This hot spring resort boasts of beautiful grounds with 3 bath facilities (2 segregated and 1 mixed gender) and a total of 16 pools altogether. The segregated bath had pools around a gorgeous Japanese garden. Our room, albeit a little small for 3 people, was surprisingly comfortable, although we had to put our luggage at the enclosed balcony to fit all 3 of us comfortably. Our room didn’t come with a bathroom but had a washbasin at the entrance. The shared toilet and bath just down the hall was clean. We had most of our meals there, and I was happy with what I had during our stay– Hida beef teppanyaki, a curry dish and a zaru soba. Breakfast was typical Japanese, which included Hoba Miso – a Hida specialty that I had come to love.

Hirayu Onsen is a small cluster of onsen ryokans at the halfway point between bus terminals from Matsumoto and Takayama. It is very near the bus terminal so it was quite easy to find. There are also regular buses to Toyama as well.

This was my first stay at an onsen ryokan in Japan and I have to say... I loved the experience! I stayed in a "gassho-style" single room with an attached toilet - a worthy choice. The view was awesome as the room looked out to the Japanese courtyard where I could still see bits of snow and the traditional buildings in the compound.

The price was OK for an onsen ryokan (paid about 100 USD for a night, inclusive of 2 meals) considering that the onsen facilities were pretty spacious. It's not the most luxurious nor the cheapest but I did enjoy myself.

The dinner was pretty nice, in a simple kaiseki (traditional multi-course) style, served at the communal dining area. I got to eat some Hida Beef to grill at my table! Some of the food were a little cold because I went down a little late in the session so do go early. You get free flow of rice and tea with your meal as well.

There are private onsen rooms suitable for families or couples but only available on a first-come-first-served basis so do look out for them!

They provided me with 2 sets of yukata robes, 1 haori (jacket), a pair of socks, a set of big and small towels which was nice. They also have a small rack for you to dry your towels in the room.

Room Tip: Do get a room with toilet as the shared ones are pretty far from the room.

Just a minute walk uphill from the bus terminal. Very convenient even walking in snow, lugging luggages and a kid. The 11 onsens baths in the women section were fun. Especially with the beautiful snow surrounding the pools. Food was very nice. Had to make our own futon bed in the Japanese room. The heating in the room was not great though. Just a portable small heater so its either too hot near the heater or too cold away from it! Minor issue though coz I still slept like a baby. Don't miss this onsen park!

This is the best of its class, its quite an experience to try this Japanese onsen that is obviously catered to the masses. Just walking along the long long corridor to our room evokes memories of Japanese horror movies, but in a good way :)
Unpretentious, affordable and very good value.
16 rotemburos each for man and woman, and 2 free private family baths as well. Food is reasonable and served in a holiday camp styled canteen.
There is a lovely sitting/resting area near outside the bath, and the wood surrounds is beautiful.
Hirayu is a lovely spot.

Stayed for a night on 27 Dec 2012. Great location, just a few minutes walk from the Bus Terminal, which was fortunate, as it snowed the night before. Good access to the skiing resort and waterfall. Do remember to get the complimentary discount for ski lift.

Good variety of outdoor baths that you can move around. As it just snowed, the place is just peaceful and with a very relaxing feel. Tried the private onsen .. reasonable size that can accommodate up to a family of five. However, onsen amenity was missing .. no comb, ear cotton, shaver, tooth brush ,etc .. was told that we we need to pay for it.

Nothing special for the meals . it was tasty though .. liked the HIda beef served.

We arrived from Matsumoto too early to check in (for JR pass holders there is a 50% discount for a Matsumoto-Hirayu Onsen return bus ticket) and decided to visit the Hirayu Onsen public bath (free) which is 5mins away. It had snowed for 2 days and whole area was capped with snow. The public outdoor baths (separate facility for male and female) were set in a wooded area among rustic wooden buildings and the change room has no heating; but sitting in the hot bath with beautiful view of snow capped trees and foliage up close makes up for the for the lack of facilities n freezing weather.

Back to Hirayunomori , there are at 7 outdoor baths for men and 11 for ladies. Set in a wooded area, the beautiful setting is accentuated by the snow and icicles hanging from the eaves of the wooden buildings.
Food is so-so. Room is clean and of reasonable size. We had western style beds.
Quite a few day trippers to the onsen.

The onsen is great. The numerous pools are nicely laid out and landscaped. The scrub down area could stand to be renovated, but ... big deal. It's a fun experience. The hotel itself is not remarkable and it is very expensive (maybe it is best suited for a family.) The dinner (included in the price) was good. If I were to do it again, I'd consider staying nearby and paying the day use fee for the pools. We paid about $275.
