The staff is extremely friendly and will go out of their way to meet your every need. Their English is sufficient to handle basic needs but of course they will appreciate if you at least try the odd sentence in Japanese.
Needless to say, since this is a Ryokan and they don't have that many international guests, you'll have a chance to get a more real experience of Japan - from the futon to traditional breakfast/dinner. Speaking of breakfast and dinner, both of them were excellent, served in the common room in a great atmosphere.
The room is spacious and tidy, the balcony looks out on the woods.
You also have your own bathtub, but surely you'll also like to try one of the ryokan's onsen. There is one indoors (standard issue yet nice) and one outdoors (pleasant setting, but don't expect a view - if you're looking for that, try some of the public outdoor onsens in the neighborhood.)
The low price makes this an even better deal.
By the way: if you're taking the bus, get off at Shin Hirayu Onsen and walk 50m downhill.
In short: strongly recommended.
