...to view artwork and calligraphy, as well to learn about the ancient history of Takayama and other areas of Japan and the world, all in one beautiful, state-of-the-art museum. Hikaru museum is situated in Takayama, also known as "little Kyoto," in the Japanese Alps. I have visited there several times and look forward to returning there again soon. Don't miss it!

Last week we discovered this museum mostly because one of the four of us was an architect.
The special art exhibit was of the work of Hokasai with a big dose of Hiroshige thrown in. The building is unique among modern buildings; built to resemble a meso-american pyramid. Lovely exhibit spaces which included a wide variety of arts & crafts as well as the special exhibit. The gift shop items were excellent and well priced (less of the tacky stuff you saw everywhere and bargains on quality posters, etc.) The building is owned by a religious sect, but no effort was made by them to prosthelytize. Well worth the admission and cost of taxi to take us there and bring us back. We only saw the art, not the other exhibits.

The entrance of the museum welcomes you in an open arm. Once you enter, there is a deli located on the right hand side of entrance that sells good cheese cake to go with a cuppa coffee. The deli has a nice view overlooking the landscaping outside the museum. On the left hand side of the entrance, there is a souvenir shop.

Escalators on both side of the entrance brings you to the inner entrance which you have to pass thru a replica of a mini bridge with water fountain on both sides. They have many exhibits from around the world and you can explore all levels which will take about 2 to 3 hours.

The structure of the museum is an awe experience to explore. It's build replicating the mayan pyramids. A place worth visiting if you're a fan of historic ancient civilization.
