“Nice minshuku”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2012

This guesthouse has a good location in the city, approx 15 minutes from the center. Our room was quite small but clean, toilet in the corridor and common bath on ground floor. The common bath was really good. Japanese dinner and breakfast was served at low tables with place for your legs below, very comfortable and a change from sitting on the floor.

I stayed here during the spring matsuri 2012. You have to book early during the festival, and the place was full. It's excellent value for money, especially considering that the price includes breakfast and dinner. The location is convenient for the station, which is within easy walking distance (under 10 mins), and the centre of Takayama is about a quarter of an hour by foot. The room was clean if a little on the small side (4.5 tatami). There is a good-size communal bath and individual shower cubicles, which do get busy when the minshuku is full. Hot water is available from reception, where internet access is also provided; there is no wifi or kettle in the room. The dinners were an absolute feast, and the place itself is very friendly and welcoming. A large proportion of the guests were foreign, and staff will explain what you are eating, provide tips on sightseeing, etc.

Room Tip: A couple might find the 4.5 tatami rooms a little cramped: opt for one of the larger rooms.

Usually in Japan, when you go to a hotel (not a hostel), foreigners are the minority, but Sosuke seems to have made a good name for itself with the tourist community. They speak good enough English and staff are friendly and helpful. Good price, and good food too. Bedroom was a bit small but overall just fine. It has a small onsen for a hot soak on a cold day. Location is not bad, about a 10 minute walk to downtown Takayama, and very close to Takayama Station. Be sure to try the 'ashi-no-yu' or free foot bath at the huge hotel around the corner!

I lover evert minute of my stay in this lovely Minshuku. The food was great and the staff extremely friendly. Downside is the location, but if you can handle à 5-10 minute walk you are in no trouble here. i really recommend this adress.

Pros: Food is great, staff is kind, rooms are basically traditional with hot water and tea provided, tatami mats, etc.
Cons: Location. It's nice that it's a 10 minute walk from the station, but the walk is a little gross. Not dangerous, just on a busy road in a run-down, strip-mallish feeling area. REALLY detracts from the experience of wandering around the cute historic areas during the day. If I opened the sliding paper and wood windows in my room,I had a view of a parking lot and discount chain stores. Horrible to the point of being funny. The inn is on the busy road, and the sound of cars really bothered me, particularly when I had to turn off the air conditioning because it was too loud (thus, not only was the sound of cars no longer blocked out at all, but my room got too warm). The furnishings were lame - quilts on the wall that reminded me of the american west, 90s style carpet. Large TV playing most of the time in the common room, which was smoky. No wifi. Small, old towels provided. etc.
At the end of the day, I can't really recommend it for the traditional experience unless you're not picky about those details mentioned above.

In addition to being an excellent chef, Hide-san is very personable; he spent some time chatting with my husband, and his wife went out of her way to make our seven-year-old son feel at home (when he had finished dinner, she sat and watched TV anime with him while mom and dad leisurely enjoyed our food). Our room and the bath and WC were perfectly clean. This was our first trip to Hida Takayama, and we will certainly stay here again next time.

Minshuku Sosuke is a great place to stay in Takayama. We stayed here for the Spring Matsuri and it was a wonderful experience. The room was very spacious and clean, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The bathrooms are shared, but are very spacious and clean. It felt as if being part of a home. There is no internet in the rooms however, there is a computer in reception which can be used.

We had a dinner and breakfast set and it was extremely good value, the dinner included Hida Beef, freshly caught river fish from the rivers around Takayama as well as many other regional delicacies. The inn is situated around about 5-10 minutes from Takayama station and has well presented directions on their website. It is also around 10 minutes away from the main centre of Takayama, which enables travelers to enjoy the sights of Takayama easily.

The experience during the festival was wonderful. On the night before we were shown how to get to the night festival, which for first timers in Takayama was extremely invaluable. on the morning festival the procession past the inn and we were able to experience a personal lion dance.

When I return to Japan I will definitely make sure to book the Minshuku Sosuke again!
