“Superb Ryokan Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2014 via mobile

If you've never stayed at a traditional Japanese ryokan this is THE place to try it (and if you have already stayed at one, still come here, you'll be impressed!).

The location is ideal for exploring the best of what Takayama has to offer. The staff are super friendly, and several speak good English. The rooms are a good size, comfortable, and you don't hear your neighbors. The onsen is very good, with indoor and outdoor baths that rotate between men's and women's daily so if you stay 2 nights you get to try both onsen. The meals are also very very good, and are a real chance to experience authentic, healthy Japanese cuisine.

Plan on at least 2 nights in Takayama (3 is better) to give you chance to explore and get a feel for the place.

Takayama is a beautiful town and staying in Yamakyu onsen was a very nice experience. If you go, ask for breakfast and lunch, the food is great, abundant and very cheap. Futons were clean and they connect an electric blanket under the sheets if was too cold. I would recommend!

We have to agree with all the previous reviewers that say what a great place this is to stay. A very comfortable "taste" of traditional Japan with the futons, tatami mats and of course the beautiful food.
We are also in our sixties, coped well with sleeping on the floor, loved the onsen experience, were grateful for the train pick up and delivery and would highly recommend this Ryokan for any age.

We are a french couple in our sixties maiking a round trip in Japan. We stayed 3 nights in this very confortable ryokan. The owners are very king and gave us several clues to help us. The hotel is very clean any the bahts are very confortable, both internal and external. The japaneese breakfasts and diners are great and différent every day. The location of the hotel is a very quiet place at about 20 minutes of the railway station and the owner can pick up us at the station.
À very good adress in Takayama.

This was my 1st Ryokan experience so I was worried if the walls would be thin or if sleeping on the ground would be uncomfortable.

The whole experience exceeded my expectations. The staff were amazing, the food was superb, the baths were great, the futon bed was comfortable, and the walls were thick enough.

The website says no internet, but they do offer wireless. There is one English speaking staff Koichi who accommodated us just well.

Thank you to the owner himself who picked us up at the station, the owner's wife who dropped us off, and all the amazing staff.

Highly recommended!

The ryokan is beautifully decorated with antiques and classic items, neat and clean. The owners and staffs are kind and caring. Breakfast is beautiful and delicious. Onzen bath is clean and so relaxing after a continuous long walk for the whole day.

The location is about 15-20 mins walk from the train station (which makes the ryokan be situated in a quiet peaceful area near a shrine) and they manage to provide appointed pick-up/ drop-off services on the arrival and leaving, so it's no problem being a bit far from the central of the city.

On the day we left, Typhoon entered the main land and all JR trains stopped operating, the owner kindly followed news for us and kept us informed until the re-opration of the trains. They also altered the van delivery time to the train station to meet with the situation, a professional service I must say.

Room Tip: We had a connecting 2-Japanese rooms which was so spacey for a large group of friends or extended fa...

We stayed two nights but only booked meals for the first night expecting to find a nice local café after that. However the dinner and breakfast the first night were so outstanding in every way and we booked to have meals there the second night also. The ryokan owner is a collector of all sorts of odd items and there are display cabinets tucked away in all the public areas which are worth spending a bit of time looking at. There is a small onsen in the basement level which is quite nice for relaxing dip.
The room was only a six mat room which we found a bit small after staying in eight mat rooms in other places. Other than that, we loved this place.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the Japanese garden, lovely view.
