“A Slice of History”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

This is the only remaining building of its kind in Japan I believe, and it was interesting to see the various types of official rooms and the kind of deference afforded people of varying status, and the living quarters for the officials. Particularly interested in the court section which displays various types of punishment meted out to miscreants! Well kept and presented. Shoes have to be removed for walking on the tatami areas. The city loop bus stops right outside.

“What a difference a guide makes”
Reviewed 31 May 2014

I was having a great time following the arrows from one room to th next and reading the plaques on the walls, most of which had English translations. A group caught up to me and the guide asked if I would like to join them. Being something of a loner, I was reluctant, but why not? Why not indeed! She was knowledgeable, answered our questions, and pointed out details that we would have missed. She made an memorable experience unforgettable.

“Enjoy the beautiful architecture!”
Reviewed 24 May 2014

This historical building is in the centre of Takayama, near the shopping district. Allow at least an hour to walk through the many rooms and look at the displays.

“Glimpse into past”
Reviewed 22 May 2014

The property is huge and fascinating. Its best to do the viewing with the free english guide. Majority of print exhibits are in english which is a shame, as it spoils the experience. Beside the morning Jinya market so you can time the visit together. Gives you a good feel of how the rich and warlords used to live. If you have watched Shogun or Samurai, then it gives a realistic feel to the experience.
