Takayama is a small town, with quite a lot of foreign tourists. When we arrived at Kyoya, recommended by our ryokan, we were a little concerned that the clientele was mainly foreign, as generally food is better in restaurants frequented by locals. However our BBQ meal was enjoyable, we had beef, chicken, pork and vegetables. And it was less expensive that I had expected.

Overall, good but not excellent. We're travelling with a two year old, so my reviews start with that perspective.

The pluses are children are welcome, staff are smiley and friendly, English menu available. Tatami seating available (table also available), kids cutlery provided (but not unbreakable bowls/plates). The only minus is that it's not non-smoking.

Food - we had Hida beef on miso cooked over a mini grill. It was tasty but not the best we'd had.

One tip - if you are a nihonshu lover (sake), you need to order it from the Japanese menu, where there is a great selection of cold and hot, in bottles and glasses, varying prices. On the English menu, it simply states "sake, hot or cold, sweet, dry or very dry". We ordered from this first, a cold dry nihonshu and it came in an interesting jug that had a place for ice to keep the nihonshu cold. However, when we poured it out, it was room temperature, and not nice at all. It's quite disappointing to see a popular restaurant such as this not have a good selection on nihonshu on its English menu. Then again, that could be in relation to the demand (or lack of) from the foreign guests.

There were Japanese guests enjoying their dinner there, but it's definitely popular with foreigners.

I learned about this restaurant from Trip Adviser and it ranks as 4th out of 825 restaurants in Takayama. We took the short cab ride down the hill to the restaurant after making a booking and we were shown to our Japanese style table on the floor. The seating position is pretty uncomfortable because there is no room for your legs to extend unless you sit side on. We ordered Hida beef and you cook it on a charcoal grill at the table. The beef tastes sensational. The best I have ever had. It is fairly fatty but is very sweet tasting. The decor in the restaurant is olde world Japan and the staff are very nice. The restaurant has plenty of character and they all speak English which is a relief. Our meals were great and not particularly expensive compared to Sydney prices. They called a cab for us to get back to the hotel. Oval a great experience and well worth the visit.

My family and I went to this restaurant based on a recommendation from a tour guy. This place did not disappoint, first there was traditional Japanese style fish and soups and all types of meats prepared in different ways that my kids loved!

We sat at a table called Tatami (where you sit on the floor) and our table had a charcoal grill embedded in it where you grill your own meat.

We ordered miso soup, croquettes that was battered with something sweet, deep fried tofu, (which i grilled some more), wheinerschnitzel, and a dish of raw meat for grilling (plus a bunch more items).

The entire dinner for 4 including drinks was under ¥9,100, a bargain for everyone with different appetites and all left full!

Note: you can sit at a table so you don't have to kneel.

Great combination of Japanese and Western food. Kids are not found of Japanese food. We ordered combination meat plater that you grill in front of you, miso rice (again they cook miso in front of you) in a little stove, kids had breaded pork and potatoes and we're happy as well. Best of all it was not hot inside. Tatami and regular tables available. This restaurant is a block away from busy streets so it was not busy. Great food, great interior, courteous and prompt service, highly recommend.
