“Amazing Experience”
Reviewed 26 April 2012

We were here in October 2011 when the forest foliage was intensely coloured and the skies were clear and blue. The Yumoto Cyouza was so in keeping with its surroundings from every aspect - the building seemed to be made from beautiful old wood and the food was incredible - by far the best food experience we had in Japan. All the ingredients were sourced locally and served in beautiful private dining rooms with your own Japanese style central fire. The Onsens are beautiful and for bashful westerners there is a lovely selection of private Onsen. Getting there requires a bit of determination which means that we didn't meet any other westerners which was lovely. Our room was really comfortable with a beautiful view of the mountains and the peaceful sound of water and the forest... This is a very special place and I would recommend anyone to stay here.

I stayed at Yumoto Choza in Autumn 2009.

The ryokan is situated in a stunning location in Okuhida, beautiful mountains all around, and in my case all the bright bold autumn colours. I have stayed in quite a few ryokan in Japan now and Yumoto seemed to be quite luxurious in its detail.

Service was just excellent. From a young man running in front of our car to direct us to a park, to detailed english help and assistance from the staff, they were always friendly and eager to please/assist.

The room was really quite big, large entrance, separate room with hearth & basin, the main room with table & futon and also a sitting area.

Food was really good, the quality of hida beef was fantastic, the beef sushi melted in the mouth (as opposed to some I had previously which required a bit too much chewing...) and there were numerous courses as there is with kaiseki cuisine. Our dinner was also held in a private room ( I think there is also a big communal dining room) and luckily for my long legged partner had leg space under the table/hearth.

The hot springs were all beautiful and man, were there lots of them! There were around 4 private hot springs as well as 1 large public female & 1 large public male. There are also 2 gender separated hot springs alongside the river, a short walk from the ryokan. AND then yumoto choza have a deal with surrounding ryokans that allows guests to visit other ryokans hot springs at allocated times.... I was almost stressing over the abundance of choices to relax!

I would really recommend Yumoto Choza. The Okuhida area is really worth a visit, only 1 hour drive from Takayama and it is just beautiful. It is hard to get english information on the area so best to go prepared.

We stayed at the Yumoto Choza for two nights, and I deffinitely recommend it.

Getting there is tiring and you need almost an entire day if you are coming from Tokyo or Kyoto, but once you get there all the effort seems to pay off.

Food is great (do not expect to eat any western food, just authentic japanesse specialities), service is kind and rooms are so big that you actually forget you are in Japan! On top of that, you have the Onsen of course.

A perfect place to be after a day hiking up in the mountains!

Yumoto Choza had a tiny mention in the Japan Lonely Planet, and I decided to go there with my parents and some friends for Christmas.

The ryokan itself is beautiful... low wooden beams, tatami floors, winding corridors with traditional art on the walls. the bedrooms were large and very comfortable, with a table during the day, and soft futons rolled out at night.

The food was AMAZING. Each night we had a 7+ course meal made entirely from local produce - like tiny stuffed apples with intricate designs carved into the skins, or whole fish cooked in front of us in our own traditional sunken hearth in our private dining room.

The hot springs were also beautiful - there were a couple of large open single-sex ones, and then a bunch of small private ones where couples could relax together.

It was snowing when I was there, and it is truly an amazing experience to be sitting naked in a natural hot spring, while beautiful white snow falls around you on Christmas eve.

The staff at the onsen spoke almost no English, but we didn't find that a problem. They were very friendly, and with the help of our phrase book we managed to communicate pretty well.

I cannot recommend Yumoto Choza highly enough. I'd absolutely go back.

  • Liked — the incredible atmosphere
  • Disliked — it was pretty remote, we had to get two trains and a bus
