Absolutely gorgeous ryokan on the bank of a river outside Takayama. I wish we'd had more time to just chill and enjoy it. It's expensive, but it's unlike anywhere else you've ever stayed. Breakfast and dinner are included, and you can get a "Western" style breakfast if you like, although it's only somewhat western. The kai-seki (sp?) dinner was amazing.

The location of this hotel, right by the river, with the sound of gushing water at all time, the small and beautifully designed passages and beautiful houses makes this place unique and gorgeous. The food is also delicious, although its a 10 course meal so its way too much food.

Room Tip: Do not settle for a room at the main building- take only the hosues!!! the main building rooms are n...

I NOTICED THE PHOTOS HAD DISAPPEARED FROM MY REVIEW SO I HAVE RE-POSTED IT & INCLUDED THE ORIGINAL PHOTOS AGAIN. THANKS.
We paid JPY 151,000 for two people for two nights stay at the Wanosato ryokan in Takayama. It was not worth even half that! It was located 20 minutes from Takayama's town centre & there was nothing at all of interest nearby. The carpet in the room was musty, smelly & badly stained. The upholstered chairs in the room were filthy & also badly stained. There was no air-conditioning. The bathroom had not been renovated for 40 years. Overall, the room reminded us of the deceased estate of a very elderly person. The food was ok, but not worth the price. We stayed in lots of traditional ryokans during our time in Japan & this was really our only bad experience.

We stayed for 2 nights at Wanosato, and although we had been to several other top end ryokan during our holidays in Japan, this was our absolute favorite!
We stayed in the Garyu room, which is actually a stunning 3 room villa. It's nicely located next to the river and features an open fireplace in the main room. The bathroom is a bit dated, but very large (separate toilet and separate room with shower and bath) and immaculatly clean.
Staff spoke only little English, but couldn't possibly have been more friendly , welcoming and efficient!
Yes, Wanosato is a 20 minutre drive from Takayama, but there is a complimentary shuttle bus to Takayama station. The location is very secluded and more than compensates for the distance to Takayama.
Dinner was served in the main building as Garyu is located too far from the main building to serve dinner in the room. The food was of exceptional quality! Although we enjoyed several exclusive kaiseki dinners during our holidays in Japan I can say that the quality and presentation of the food (dinner as well as breakfast) topped everything else we experienced!
After dinner hot sake was served in front of the fireplace in the main building.
Wanosato was a very special experience which I can only highly recommend!

We stayed at Wanosato for 1 night in late Dec. We stayed in Takayama for 2 nights but because we knew that Wanosato was in the countryside, we had booked a ryokan in the old town centre of Takayama for the next day. Wanosato is a wonderful rural retreat, and great for long (bracing) walks by the river and soaking in the indoor hot springs. It's abt a 20-min drive to the Takayama train station. There is very little English spoken here, but the every member of staff we met was exceedingly patient and polite.

Our room was very spacious, but perhaps a bit too much unused space! The entryway had a mini irori (sunken hearth) that is probably not used by guests as there is a big communal irori in the lobby for all guests. The bathroom area was very large - a seperate room for the bath, one for the toilet and one for the sink. It is old but very clean.

We had a sumptuous and elegant kaiseki dinner in our room (hida beef was one of the many dishes), and the general manager/owner? of the ryokan came to greet us during dinner and presented us with a little gift. Upon learning that we were newly married, she then sent for a bottle of sake! The head chef of Wanosato also came to greet us during dinner. We were really impressed with the service. The breakfast the next morning was really good too.

Guests were encouraged to gather by the irori after dinner (perhaps only in the winter months). We were served sake by a really friendly employee who showed us many hilarious magic tricks. The sake, which was heated by the hot sand of the hearth, was poured out from hollowed bamboo sticks into our little bamboo cups.

We were driven to the town centre the next morning and before we departed, we were given hot sachets to warm our hands and a group of the staff members came out to send us off.

  • Liked — service, food, scenery
  • Disliked — bathroom could do w/ a refurbishment
