“Wonderful stay”
Reviewed 26 April 2014

We stayed two nights in early April and found this Inn an unexpected pleasure. It is so well located for the kenroku-en garden and for easy access to bus stops for the city loop bus to visit other attractions.
The inn is in a quiet street and has a lovely setting and garden which we enjoyed from our spacious room and the dining room. Mr and Mrs Sawano and their son are delightful hosts and take great pride in this house which has been in their family for generations. The breakfasts are great and the internet is fast. It was particularly nice to have a sitting area in our bedroom after some of the small places we have stayed in elsewhere in japan.

Room Tip: Ask for room overlooking the garden

The Camellia Inn is truly enchanting, the rooms are minimalist but what they lack in luxury is more than made up by the warmth of the welcome from Mr & Mrs Sawano and their son. Mrs Sawano is a wonderful cook and enjoys spoiling her guests - whether you are having dinner, breakfast or merely snacks around the bar - everything including the bread is home made and delicious. Mrs Sawano seems to love everything English and as a consequence the tourist are treated as very special.
The location is ideal 400 metres from the Kenrokeun Gardens and castle and 10-15 mins walk from the 21C Museum of Contemporary art and the museum of Traditional Products. It is a truly Japanese experience with softer English touches.

We recently (April) returned to the Camellia Inn in Kanazawa for the second time. On our first stay we were enchanted with the Inn, the Sawano family who run it, and especially Mrs Sawano's cooking. We were not disappointed when we returned. The Inn was as charming as before, one of the most charming inns we've ever stayed in. The service was, as before, beyond a normal service relationship, complete with a "welcome home" every time we re-entered the house. A difficult special diet was catered for without question, and in fact, Mrs Sawano went to great lengths to cook innovative dishes that accommodated the diet. A bonus is that Mrs Sawano now offers dinners on most days. We recommend that you try them!

The Inn is in a small historic building, with a dining room looking out to a beautiful small garden. The bedroom we had was spacious, with a comfortable sitting area furnished with a small sofa, and armchair with footstool, plus a view over the garden. The bathroom was spacious, particularly for Japan. There is a small sitting room on the first floor, where cold and hot water is on tap, with tea-making facilities. Downstairs there is another lovely sitting room in the most historic part of the building.

The Camellia Inn is a very friendly, charming, and comfortable place to stay. It is also very conveniently sited. Very close to Kenrokuen Garden, one of the three best gardens in Japan, and a key reason for visiting Kanazawa. There is a second special, but smaller, garden, Gyokusen-en in the street leading to the inn. There are excellent bus services that lead to all areas of Kanazawa a few minutes walk away.

We highly recommend this inn, we will return again if we can.

A fantastic place to stay when in Kanazawa (little Kyoto).

Camellia Inn is charming and delightful. There is nothing like returning after a day of walking around Kanazawa and relaxing in the lounge / private library area with a cocktail while listening to classical European background music. Family run, the Sawano’s are well travelled and this shows in their eclectic art collection on display.

The Inn is conveniently located to all tourist sites and is a 7 minute stroll to the famous Kenrouken Garden. A local bus stop is near by (approx ¥1,200 taxi to the Train station). The Sawano family are good English speakers, very friendly and helpful. The breakfasts are fantastic (allergies are catered for).

The rooms are western style, very clean, roomy and comfortable. Having lived in and travelled extensively in Japan, we can recommend Camellia Inn – great value for money.

The Camellia Inn is a wonderful place with helpful owners. It combines traditional architecture with modern conveniences. The room we had was spacious and comfortable with Western style beds and bathroom. The bathtub is not the usual small tub as in most Japanese hotels. There is closet and storage space and comfortable chairs in the room for relaxing. There is a lovely kura (traditional storehouse) that has been renovated into a lounge. The owners are friendly and gracious. The breakfast was delicious. If you want to stay in a small inn with service that includes giving directions and information on Kanazawa in English then this is an excellent choice
