Guesthouse Ochakare
Reviewed 9 November 2013

The guesthouse is as everybody raved about. Comfy, new and rather convenient. However, the information on the rooms/dorms are inaccurate and that is rather unfortunate. For example, I had found out about this guesthouse on jalan.net and on the website, it stated that the female dorms (max. 2 persons) which gave the idea that there is a female dorm of 2 beds only and the rest of the options were male dorm, private tatami mat room and a mix dorm. Being a single female traveler, I reserved a bed in the female dorm, thinking that it was only a 2 bed-der but after I had checked in, it was a six bed female dorm instead! In fact, the options on hostel world was also inaccurate, there was an option of a 4-bed female dorm when there was none! This inaccurate information display was disturbing especially from a guesthouse in japan. Questions were asked about this misrepresentation of information at the guesthouse but an equally confusing answer was given!

All in all, although the guesthouse is comfy, trendy and clean, the misrepresentation of information given was a letdown.

Room Tip: I suppose, hostel world will offer a better option for this guesthouse rather than the others. Do ch...

We have just stayed 1 night in ochakare guesthouse. It is located 5 minutes walk away from the station.

The house is completely new and cvery very clean. We hired a private japanese style room for 2 people and it was quite big in the standars of Japan. Futons were very comfortable.

Miki was very charming and welcoming. She was very helpful recommending us what to see and what to eat.

I'll recommend everybody to stay there if they are looking for a cheap and nice stay in Kanazawa.

We stayed for one night in a Japanese style room (more comfortable than expected). Very conveniently located less than a 10minute walk from the train/bus station. Miki was incredibly welcoming and helpful - taking the time to sit with us to review a map of the city and top sights, even booking our tour of the 'Ninja Temple'. Note that towels are not provided, but can be rented for a small fee.

Brand new place that even smelled new. Located less than 10 min walk from main station. Very tidy. Comfy dorm beds. Staff Miki helpful.

Was first a bit annoyed that they didn't want to keep my luggage later than noon (same day) after check-out, but staff adviced me to use coin lockers at station which proved to be cheap and less than 30 m from my night bus to Tokyo. No chairs in lounge. No laundry service but advised me of a coin laundry about 15 min walk from hostel. You sit on cushions on the floor. Personally I prefer chairs but in Japan you sit Japanese!

Ochakare is immaculately clean, super conveniently located, and full of character. Miki, the owner, is super cute! She is super helpful with recommendations and obviously loves what she does. As a a solo traveler it was a great place to stay - really easy to meet other travelers in the little common room. From the JR station Ochakare is very close (5 mins walking) but not super easy to find. Just ask at the tourist information desk for Ochakare and they will give you detailed directions that Miki has written up.

Stay here!

The guesthouse is very comfortable, very clean and very well located closed to the train station. Easy walking distance from all the major tourist spots in Kanazawa. The owner Miki is really helpful, speak a perfect english. She helped us to book ticket for the Sumo tournament (only Japanese)!!! This is the best quality/price guesthouse of our stay in japan

Guesthouse Ochakare is definitely a hidden gem. Beautiful, absolutely spotless and with amazing hosts with an impeccable knowledge of their local area. Our hosts we kind enough to give us the run down of their beautiful town and provide great advice about what highlights to plan during our stay. We affectionately nicknamed our Japanese style futon beds "clouds" as they were the most comfortable beds we had the whole holiday. Brand new and very high tech, whilst still retaining a traditional feel.
Would definitely recommend this place to any friends or family heading to Japan (and Kanazawa in general was amazing!).
Thanks Miki and Toshi for making our stay so enjoyable.
