“Good location and friendly service”
Reviewed 22 April 2014

5 minutes walk from the train station and the bus terminal, which is one street away from the train station. Matsumoto is very small and this was in one of the tallest buildings and easy to spot with big blue writing high on the building. Reception staff very friendly but strict about check in time, 3 pm. Bags are looked after though while you go and explore. Rooms about 18 squared metres, with an extra sliding door to block out corridor noise, from the bedroom side. Sink is outside the bathroom and had a room with shower only. Usual electric budget and heated toilet seat. Wifi good for phones and laptop, don't know about iPads. Did not try the ramen but the photos looked good! Everything is within walking distance. Mattress firm but comfortable. Good quality cotton bed linen, but nylon pyjamas. Good eating options everywhere. Good horse restaurant opposite, which is a speciality of the area.

I agree with everything that was written on 27th Oct. 2013. This hotel is just the same as a travelodge in the UK. If that's your kind of thing then this is the one for you. I don't especially understand the great location comments as Matsumoto is really small so almost anywhere woild probably be OK for sightseeing. Someone else has said that the breakfast was great -it really wasn't and ranked the most basic with the least choice of the four hotels we stayed in in Japan. Our room was tiny and our bed sagged in the middle so not that comfortable either.
What is true though is the staff are really lovely and the free washing machines were a fabulous bonus. All in all nice people but very average hotel.

Great value for money, amazing Japanese breakfast included, great Onsen included, perfect location, really close to the station and amenities. Castle and museum are very close. Very confortable bed&pillow. Highlight for us was the wonderful service we received from everyone but especially from N Mizuno, our (english speaking) saviour. An extremily helpful and wonderfully efficient lady that sorted out our lugagge arrangements for the rest of the trip. Thank you so much!!!

We can be very straight forward about this hotel. From Check-in to Check-out great experience. Clean and nice rooms, lovely onsen on the roof, free coffee/tea, free Ramen, free extensive breakfast (Japanese and Western), free washing machines and dryers for 100 yen. At a short distance to train station.

Reviewed 13 February 2014

I stayed at the Dormy Inn - Matsumoto for two nights in February 2014.

We had stayed at their property in Otaru (Japan) last year and enjoyed the property and service so much that we decided to give them a try in Matsumoto, too.

The lobby was staffed by a friendly crew and was immaculate. Our room was in the very back of the building and was 100% quiet. The bathroom was clean and efficient, with soaps and shampoo provided in the (small) shower stall plus a washlet toilet. The sink area was outside the bathroom and had a good sized counter area for toiletries.

There was also a closet area with hangers, a desk, TV, desk chair, and nightstand. The (slightly obstructed) view from the room showed the western snow-capped mountains.

The bed, as it seems to be in all of Asia, was more firm than I would have liked, but the linens were nice. Upon check-in there were only two tiny pillows (they were about half the size of a normal pillow). But we requested more pillows and they quickly and happily obliged.

At night, they offer free ramen in the downstairs restaurant area. On the top floor and roof there is a sento (or onsen?). Either way, there are separate spas on the top for men and women. After the shower/bathing area there was a dry sauna, a cold pool, a hot pool and then an outdoor (hot) pool. Personally, we found the hot water too hot to be comfortable so we were unable to use them for long (it must have been over 40C or 100F). We had the same problem at their property in Otaru. However, since it's winter, the outdoor pool was a bit easier for entering since you had the cool breeze. I wish the separate pools were at different temperatures.

The location is great...we were able to walk to Matsumoto Castle, Matsumoto Station, plus many restaurants and some charming shopping streets. The Art Museum was a short drive (or bus ride) away.

My only complaints (and they're minor) were that the onsen pools were too hot and that the washlet water temperature dropped from worm to frigid before it finished cleaning you...to the point of numbing your behind. But those are extremely minor complaints. The property is so good in every other area that it seems petty to even mention these things. I just prefer my reviews to be well-rounded.

All in all, I would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to friends.

Room Tip: Be sure to take advantage of the free ramen every night!

I stayed there for the first time with my wife for one night.
The hotel location is very convenient, only a few minutes walk from JR station as well as Highway Bus Station.
The receptionists were very friendly, and we had no issue with check-in. Because we were so tired, we had no chance to have a free noodle served between 21.30 and 23.00.

Unfortunately, our double room was quite small, and smelled very badly. It was like that air condition had not been cleaned fro years. Actually, it made us feel a bit sick. Also, there were stains on wall/carpet, as mentioned in previous reviews.

However, the spring spa was excellent.
Also, Breakfast was great. Each item is not a big portion, and put in a small plate, so you can choose as many plate as possible to enjoy/experience different items. Also some items were local-speciality that you cannot try outside Nagano Pref. We loved them!

Location ideal. Very clean rooms. The two of us were fine with the space. Excellent breakfast buffet included in $125-130 per night twin room, the only such benefit of any of our hotel stays. And how about that super ramen treat at 9:30-11PM! My wife loved the onsen - clean and modern. I don't do heat well so remained in room with my self-created Wi-Fi, thanks to a friend's recommending the TP-Link mini-router (Model No.TL-WR702N -$21.99 online thru Walmart) used with my iPod Touch.

A special note of praise for Naomi who assisted us in many ways that added to our enjoyment of this wonderful segment of our 3 week Japan journey.

I know where we'll stay on return to Matsumoto.
