“Affordable luxury”
Reviewed 10 July 2014 via mobile

Stylishly done up and easy travel to the station plus three minutes from the castle.

We had room 817 on the top floor. Big and superb views out over the castle and the mountains stretch out on all sides. Beds a bit small but deliver a good night's kip.

Staff are a bit quiet but helpful. Not a lot of English spoken but again no big deal.

Several bakeries/convenience stores down the road for breakfast items. Tonnes of places to eat but nothing better than buying something from the shop and eating in the grounds of the magnificent castle.

The location of this hotel is brilliant - a stones throw from a main street that leads directly to the castle in one direction (just a few short blocks) and to a cross street in the other that will take you to the train station, and in between lots of art/craft shops to explore. The hotel's entrance is marked by an orange sign down the small side street next to Harmonie Bien. We caught a taxi to the hotel from the station when we arrived, but walked to the station the next day as it was so easy to find and only a 15 minute walk.
The castle has parkland around the moat, and when we arrived we left our bags at the hotel and took some sushi to sit in the park before going into the castle, which was crowded but magnificent. It is amazing that this beautiful wooded structure has survived and once up the top it affords lovely views across the city and to the mountains. It was really hot the day we visited but in the castle it was cool and next to the open windows fresh breezes made it a very pleasant place to sit for a while.
We had a large room with no view of the castle and we were very comfortable. We had breakfast the next morning, which had a good range of western and Japanese foods and was reasonably priced, however despite good service the atmosphere was awkward. The room, although decorated to a high standard, was very formal, with large circular tables designed to seat 8 or more. The music was funereal. Despite there being 10 people (mostly couples) having breakfast we were all at these enormous tables spread across the large room, and everyone spoke in whispers or not at all. Very odd.
The service at reception from most of the staff was excellent, which is what we had come to expect and appreciate when visiting Japan. We arrived from the train station a few hours before check-in to leave our bags. The receptionist on duty did not smile or offer any friendly overtures, which was off-putting although she may have thought we were going to try and be pushy about gaining access to our room early. There was a good system for leaving bags at reception and we were able to do this, however felt that what we had asked was a big inconvenience despite there being no other guests at reception at the time. At most hotels information on wifi access is provided when you check-in, however this was not given on this occasion, and we didn't bother following it up as we had pre-paid data to use before we left Japan anyway. For breakfast it is necessary to book in advance, which may not always be suitable. In the room itself there was little information about local restaurants or Matsumoto local sights which would have been useful.

Room Tip: Ask if there is a room with a view of the castle

Thank you for staying our hotel and glad to give us your helpful comments.
It sounds nice to have sushi in the garden of Matsumoto castle in summer time! And it seemed to be very comfortable to feel cool wind in the top of the castle.
Regarding to breakfast, we will try to improve it.
We will wait for your future visit.

After a week of sleeping on futons on the floor in ryokans we were in need of a comfy bed and this fitted the ill nicely. Brand spanky new hotel, small but very nice rooms, super clean, good service, very comfy beds. Extra for breakfast but we didnt purchase it. Wifi fast. 10 mins walking distance from station, near to castle and restaurants/shops. Reasonably priced.

The Maranouchi hotel is very well located is this small and charming city; it lies between the castle and the wonderful shopping streets near the river.
The rooms are very comfortable, many with a view. Service is great (above Japonese standards).
The breakfast room is spectacular in the lobby of a former bank.
Good value for money.

Unfortunately, we only booked one night at this great hotel. We arrived late in the day, a little tired and frustrated because what'd spent over 30 minutes trying to find the place, (no thanks to the email instructions sent by Expedia) but all of that dissipated when we were greeted at reception and informed we had been upgraded to their only suite...and it was truly lovely.

The hotel is in a good location with easy access to the most excellent Matsumoto Castle.

Room Tip: If you are using google maps to find the hotel, and don't understand Kanji or the Japanese addre...

In Matsumoto, we ended up at the Marunouchi Hotel in part because of the photo on the hotel’s webpage of its attractive and imposing façade and in part because of their claim that they are the closest hotel to the castle. Be warned: although the historic building (with banners announcing Bien and Harmonie) is part of the complex, the entrance to hotel reception (and above it, the guest rooms) is on a side street just south of the former bank building and very, very discreetly marked. Keep your eyes peeled. Tip number two: because of the hotel’s proximity to the castle, be sure to go back to the castle at night when the tour buses and hoards of school children have withdrawn: it’s magical. We loved this hotel: large, bright, comfortable room (especially the bed), well-appointed quiet, immaculate. Tip number three: be sure to make a cup of coffee in your room using the teakettle and the ingeniously designed coffee-with-filter in an envelope.
