What a marvellous place :) The hospitality, even for Japan, was extraordinary, the ryokan is beautiful and atmospheric and the food is great, but it's the details that count. When we mentioned an interest in kimonos, they happily drove us into Matsumoto the next day to a beautiful kimono store. When they saw that I was wearing a pair of slippers that were slightly too small for me, the next day they left a new pair outside the bedroom that were just right. It's a charming place that will be a highlight of your trip!

Nearing the end of my family's Japanese vacation, we decided to splurge and went for 2 nights at Fukashiso. We were picked up at Matsumoto station (west gate) as advised and the friendly man took us to the accommodation. The location is about 10 minutes drive away from the JR station, but it isn't an issue because they offer a morning and evening transportation service. The room was spacious (not the biggest, but far from cramped) and comfortable. What we really enjoyed was the food - it felt very healthy (lightly flavored and you taste the food - not excessively seasoned. Only enough to enhance the flavor of the ingredients itself. We had dinner in a private room - away from the cigarette smoke of the restaurant. The service was excellent and attentive. The onsen was very relaxing after a day's travel to unwind. Everyone in my party was impressed and super satisfied with the quality of service and the value received from this ryokan. I would without a doubt recommend this hotel should you be staying in Matsumoto. We are planning our next Japan trip and it will sure include a stay here again!

++++ they were able to accommodate the veggie eaters in our party and handled vegetarian meals very well.

Dear gk_terato,

Thank you very much for writing a review on May 29th.
It was our great joy and happiness to hear that ``Everyone in my party was impressed and super satisfied with the quality of service and the value received from this ryokan``, and that ``I would without a doubt recommend this hotel``.
We are grateful that you say, ``What we really enjoyed was the food – if felt very healthy (lightly flavored and you taste the food – not excessively seasoned. Only enough to enhance the flavor of the ingredients itself``, and ``they handled vegetarian meals very well``. Our five chefs try to provide food of handmade out of local organic vegetables and local, seasonal and additive-free ingredients. Also, our miso has been fermented using a wooden bucket which is fifity-five years old.
Thank you and looking forward to having you stay at us again soon.

Recently we stayed in this wonderful ryokan, where we experienced an extraordinary hospitality and friendliness, with a superb sense of service. High quality staff went out of there way to make us feel at home and give us a really great time: big spacious rooms, good beds, a wonderful onsen and a beautiful Japanese garden, and some of the best food we tasted in our three weeks in Japan. So please select room with dinner included! Minor quibbles nights be the limited western food options for breakfast ( if that's wat you're looking for), and the location outside the centre of town. But this was more than compensated for by the ready availability of transport assistence. Based on our experience, we recommend this ryokan highly!

I spent one night at Fukashiso and I could not have been happier. When I arrived at the station in Matsumoto, I called the ryokan and a cheery young man picked me up by car (the ryokan is about 10 minutes away by car). The lady who checked me in was a wonderful Japanese woman who spoke English very well.

The room I was given was massive - the largest I've seen in Japan! Dinner was served in a traditional dining room which had been reserved for me (so special!). The food kept coming and each dish was unique and absolutely delicious.

The following day, I was taken to the train station and the hotel staff helped me send my suitcase to my next destination. They were really, really helpful and welcoming.

Strongly recommended for people wanting to experience Japan the traditional way...

This was our teens first experience of a ryokan. They were tickled! We were greeted by Kosuzu who gave us the tour of the bath, room and restaurant. The rooms were grand with good quality tatami. We booked online through a link which was good but we should have clarified if the dinner was included in the price (it wasn't). They will pick you up and drop you off at the train/bus station. Meals were delicious and we basically had the place to ourselves. Fresh flowers everywhere. Clean bath. We met the owner and Kosuzu worked hard to please us.

Wanting to share with friends some of the cuisine and customs of Japan, I arranged for three rooms to be booked at Fukashiso Ryokan at Matsumoto. We left there so impressed by all that we experienced. This involved the following -collecting us at the railway station; escorting us for a sightseeing time around the city and collecting us again; the next day delivering us to a place for our Gateball game half an hour away and bringing us home in the afternoon ; and taking us to the railway station again. We were so thrilled to meet the owner dressed in her kimino at dinner both nights. The food was just magnificent - 2 x dinner and 2x breakfast. Sleeping on the floor took one night to get adjusted but great fun. The hot baths were new experiences as well. I was so pleased that everyone had such a fabulous experience. Our English speaker was so beautiful. Thank you Fukashiso staff!!
