“Sumpu Castle ruins”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 March 2014

Sumpu castle was built by the first Tokugawa Shogun, Ieyasu, and he used it as his retirement home. During the Meiji conversion, much was destroyed. They restored the East gate and there is a nice statue of Ieyasu. This castle ruins park is a 10-minute walk from the JR Shizuoka Shinkansen train station.

“Beautiful central site in Shizuoka City for walking”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 July 2013

The outer walls and moat are intact. It's a great park for walking. Modern prefectural buildings are all around so it's a nice contrast. Within an easy walk of Shizuoka Station.

“but.. no castle”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 September 2012

Don't let the name mislead you - Sumpu Jo Koen (Sumpu castle Park) is made up of a large park surrounded by the original moats and the outer wall mostly intact. However, apart from the entrance gate and turret - there is no castle here as it burnt down a long time ago.

“Hidden treasure of a castle park”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 April 2011

Not much remains of the actual castle but the stone fortifications, moats, and some gate buildings remain. There is a also a beautiful garden inside with a small admission charge. You can drink nice green tea at a tea house in this garden. I will return to this park again!
