My wife and I visited Toyama because we wanted to break our journey on our way to Tateyama for its infamous 18m high snow corridor along Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route. In Toyama, we chose Dormy Inn for its walking proximity to JR Station and the cherry blossoms on the banks of Matsukawa River.
The hotel is located about 1.3km from JR Toyama Station. The cool windy spring weather did not bring a sweat, even when pulling our cabin bags. Along the way, we walked past Shiokura Bridge which spanned the Matsukawa River.
The cherry blossoms along the river were in full bloom in April and it was indeed a sight to behold. The narrow width of river led to the cherry blossoms forming a canopy over the approx 1.5km length of river from Imagi Bridge to Matsukawa Bridge. River cruise was available to view the cherry blossoms up close. Along the banks, there were numerous outdoor artworks to be enjoyed.
From Shiokura Bridge, we walked past Toyama Castle Park, which occupied an entire block, and reached Dormy Inn. The hotel is located next to Toyama International Conference Centre and ANA Crowne Plaza Toyama. To the extent that Dory Inn provided functional accommodation, it probably performed well for conference delegates. Those seeking higher hotel standards can stay at ANA. For us, we preferred to spend our money to visit the snow corridor in Tateyama.
The hotel room was small with the Twin beds almost occupying the entire room. A writing desk, a LCD screen and wardrobe complete the furniture in the bedroom. The bathroom was compact sized with a bathtub and stand-in shower, WC and wash basin. Circulation space was tight. Fortunately, prior to arriving in Toyama, we had forwarded the bulk of our luggage to our next destination after Toyama. Room was clean and well maintained.
What we found interesting about the hotel is the coin laundry facility, onsen and night snacks.
There are 2 coin laundry facilities, one located in the public area and the other located inside the onsen for female guests. This allowed female guests to conveniently drop their laundry into the washer and dryer, enjoy their onsen, and collect their laundry when they are done with their onsen. There is a separate onsen for guys and if you choose to do your laundry, you have to use the one in the public area.
The hotel provided its guests with a great supper snack service at its restaurant. Guests enjoyed complimentary hot noddles soup and tea every night as supper before bedtime. Like many guests, my wife and I enjoyed our programme of nightly onsen followed by supper. In the cool spring months, it was a nice routine.
As tourists, Dormy Inn served us well as a base to visit Tateyama and to view the lovely cheery blossoms along Matsukawa River. Judging by the presence of locals, I am sure the hotel did well for domestic travellers and participants at the nearby conference centre.
