“Good accom excellently located with bonus onsen”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 March 2012

This hotel is ideally located, immediately over the road from the main sightseeing area of Kurashiki, and a few hundred metres walk from Kurashiki station (Note: this is Kurashiki, not the shinkansen stop of Shin-Kurashiki.)

For those interested in experiencing a Japanese onsen (communal bath), there's one on the top floor which includes an outdoor bath (though make sure you read up on bathing ettiquette before you jump in!) There are separate male and female baths although inputting the access code to enter the female bath can be challenging! Only quibble is that the 300 yen "onsen tax" should probably have been included with the room charge.

There is an extensive buffet breakfast available, mostly Japanese focused although with some Western options.

Rooms were well-sized and well-appointed, with complimentary Japanese-style pyjamas thrown in.

Reserved through rakuten. We really like Dormy Inns. This one had a very good location. This size bed seems to work for us (used to queens/we are not big people). We both had a relaxing public bath on the top floor of our Dormy Inn. It’s wasn’t our first Japanese-style bath but our first public gender-separated bath. Tip for all public baths: bring a small hand towel from the room to wash with.

We stayed here on the way to Naoshima. We were so impressed with this hotel, we decided to stay an extra night. Beautifully appointed room, tastefully decorated, with views over the old Kurashiki town precinct, all the usual additions (free WiFi in room etc.) with a VERY comfortable bed. The double room was larger than most other rooms in similar "business hotels". Lovely public indoor and outdoor onsen bath, free ramen noodles for supper from 9.30pm, and a good buffet breakfast, all for 10,000 yen/double. A 8-10 minute walk from the station and 2 minutes from the old precinct. You will not be disappointed. Highly recommended!

This is a hotel you would choose mainly for the location. It is about 10 minutes easy walk from the station and located right beside the Bikan Historical District which is wonderful. Nearby you will also find the O'Hara Museum of Art, Toy Museum, temples, and other sights. It is a very compact area so nothing is too far away.

On a cold day you can walk back to the station via a shopping tunnel, although it appears that many of the shops are empty, or maybe just closed on National Holidays.

The hotel is basic and clean as is very common in Japanese business hotels - they ask for you to leave keys at reception when you leave the hotel, which can be inconvenient when there is a queue checking in on your return to the hotel. . It is comfortable and quiet and I was lucky enough to have an English speaker assist with directions etc.

There are not too many restaurants in this area, mostly they seem to be around the station area, but there are a couple of small restaurants outside the hotel that are ok for something basic to eat.

Overall satisfactory stay in great location.

The Dormy Inn reflects a mostly-business focus with quite small rooms and minimal 'extras', but the location is great for seeing the Bikan historical district. Therefore I'd recommend it to tourists.

Like most Japanese hotels, you'll find the room compact but clean. The layout of the room is a little unusual, with a shower/toilet unit on one side of the entry hall, and the sink on the other. I was in a double room, and while there was plenty of space beside the bed (which is pushed into the corner) there was no real furniture to speak of. The staff were friendly. There's a laundry room with a few machines in it as well as in-room internet.

The Bikan area is about 2 minutes walk away. The Ohara Museum of Art (recommended) is also just a couple of minutes away. There's a convenience store just outside the hotel, and the walk from the station is flat and takes about 10 minutes. Plenty of restaurants nearby, including in the Bikan area if you're after real atmosphere.

Recommended.

Room Tip: Don't worry about getting a view. This isn't a picturesque spot.

We stayed 2 nights in this hotel. The hotel seemed to be brand new. The reception staff speak little English (as stated by earlier reviewers), but they were friendly and did try their best to help you. They have handy printed leaflets in English which they handout when checking in. The rooms are new, clean and well equipped. The onsen on the 11th floor is well worth a try: the female onsen consisted of a bath and a sauna inside and the is a small, beautiful outside bath. Mayor plus: This hotel has a green policy on housekeeping: you can opt for complete change of all bedding and towels, only for emptying the trash bins or no cleaning at all. I really liked this green environmental approach.

Kurashiki has a quaint old area with shops and restaurants along a canal. This seems to be it's main attraction. Hotel is close to this and within walking distance of the train station. Tourist info just outside train station was very good and spoke good English.

Hotel was clean and room was small (usual for Japan though). Hotel had an onsen which we did not use and we did not take breakfast either as it is was not included in our rate. All in all a decent place to stay for a night to see the old town.

Like other Dormy properties we stayed in they only give you one room key which is a bit of a pain. The key is used in the room. You have to give it back when you leave and ask for it again when you come back. Hotel staff did not speak much English (barely enough for check in etc) but were very friendly, tried their best and seemed to be genuinely helpful.
