APA Hotel Okayama is rather conveniently located, close to Okayama JR and about a fifteen minute walk from the nightlife of Okayama proper. While the hotel itself is quite secluded, a four or five block walk (which is really nothing in a place like Okayama) brings you to the center of restaurant world, including many international options, and karaoke centers, darts bars, and expat pubs, among others.
The hotel is in rather an old building, and looks quite forlorn from the outside, but the staff are very accommodating, speak a modicum of business English, and the rooms are clean and the beds are quite surprisingly big! This is just a business hotel, so don't expect a whole lot - there is no public bath, but the bathrooms in the rooms are spacious compared to most business hotel bathroom cubicles, and the hallways are a bit scary. There's nothing dangerous, but the walls are off-white and the doors are perfectly symmetrically placed across from each other... and painted a strange hallucinogenic burnt orange. You kind of expect the Doctor to come snatch you up, or maybe Alfred Hitchcock will pop his head out and ask you to draw his silhouette...
At 5000 yen per person, per night, in the middle of Golden Week, the place was a deal. And it was a last-minute booking, so it was worth it. But I wouldn't go back if I had other options. There are other good places in Okayama, for slightly cheaper, and for less mind-bending.
