Really enjoyed staying in this hotel with Western facilities. Very helpful staff and good service in the dining room. an unforgettable experience was watching the early morning fishermen in the lake - a free cultural show

This is the second time I stay in this resort. I find it quite comfortable and sufficient for the purposes of my travel. Lovely rooms with a magnificent view to the lake, excellent service by the personnel. Gentle figures everywhere!

Room Tip: The 530s rooms are very convenient.

We spent three nights in Matsue at Hotel Ichibata. I can believe that it is an old and reputable hotel....you can still see lots of Japanese locals coming in, dressed very well, to attend dinners and weddings, etc. I'm sure that, in its yesteryears, the hotel was truly impressive. However, the accommodations are now dated. Our "air conditioning" did not work and blew hot air into the room....we were forced to open the window (it could only be cracked open a bit) to let some cool air into the room. The beds were not very comfortable. The hotel does have traditional public bath facilities for the guests, and that was a welcomed amenity after long days of sightseeing. Hotel staff is very courteous and some English is spoken. We did not dine in the hotel and ate at restaurants closer to Matsue station. We were fortunate in that Ichibata department store had a special promotion of local food products and we were able to purchase lots of scrumptious fresh seafood items to eat. There is a Lakeline loop bus which stops directly in front of the hotel. For 500 yen, you can purchase a daypass from the bus driver; this allows you to hop on and off as many times as you wish during the day. However, the loop bus only runs from about 9am (pickup in front of Hotel Ichibata) until 6:30 p.m. Having said all of this, I must admit that our room had a lake view and it was stunning. Matsue is famed for its shijimi clams; in the early morning, we could see the clamming going on in the lake. Matsue is a truly beautiful city, with the castle moat encircling a large area of the city. The Horikawa boat ride in the moat was very enjoyable and picturesque. A tour of Matsue castle was also impressive. I thoroughly enjoyed staying in Matsue but would not book a room at this hotel again.

It's like smoke have attached to objects in the room even my smoker friends complained. On the plus side, the view of the lake at sunset was awesome.

Our group of 3 had a single - overlooking the little train station, and a twin - overlooking Lake Shinji. The views over the lake were awesome, definitely worth the extra we had to pay to be on the lake side of the building. Unfortunately there are no single rooms on the lake side, so one of our group did not have such a great view.
The hotel is old, but has had some upgrading. It must have been quite impressive in its glory days. Those glory days were a long time ago, though, and it is due for some more upgrading, particularly the bathrooms. The twin room was very large and had 2 chairs by the window. Both rooms had new flat screen TVs and fridges, but only the twin had a safe. The mattresses were hard, but not terrible. The bathrooms are really showing their age and need to be renovated.
The onsen is very nice - modern and in good condition. Upon check-in, guests are invited to select their choice of yukata to wear around the hotel and to/from the onsen.
The breakfast buffet was OK but not exceptional, and it was exactly the same all 3 mornings we were there. A little variety would be a nice improvement. We had one dinner there and it was quite good.
As far as we could see, there is almost no English spoken by any staff members, which did not bother us, since 2 of us speak Japanese.
One of the front desk clerks was very helpful in getting us a dinner reservation at the Shimane Prefectural Art Museum restaurant even when the restaurant was being difficult about the time we wanted to go and making a vegetarian meal for us.
There is a tourist bus - The Lakeliner - which has a stop right outside the hotel, making it very easy to get around to the tourist points of the city. Also right in front of the hotel is a lovely walking route along the lake - lovely for early morning or late evening walks (too hot in the daytime in August).
Overall, the hotel is showing its age but is still a good choice for a stay in Matsue.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra to get a lakeview room. It's worth it.

The hotel room was the smallest one that I have ever had and the smallest per their chart on the door: a bed, a desk, three hooks--no closet, no cabinet, no nightable. I could reach the desk to shut off my alarm while lying prone on the bed. The bathtub was so small that I couldn't sit in it. I had to use the group bath (onsen) in the hotel which was very nice. The room smelled of smoke, the curtains were soiled (smoke stained?), and the springs or buttons in the mattress were protruding. I asked for another room and even offered to pay but the hotel manager was adamant; no change! The food servers luckily were excellent and accommodating.
Matuse and surroundings however were worth the visit, especially the Adachi art museum and gardens

We stayed here because it was advertised as "english-speaking". Although the staff were very friendly, I think that may have been an overstatement. This hotel is a little bit further away than most others in Matsue (which are near Matsue Station). But, the hotel is on a bus route which gives you access to almost everywhere you want to go . Also there is a taxi stand out front which usually always has taxis waiting. The rooms could stand for some updating. The appliances were very old, the TV was very small, and the mattresses were stiff. But there was a small refrigerator and overall the room was OK. The lake views from the rooms were amazing. Overall a good place to stay but somewhat pricey (~$200/night)
