Nice suroundings and a very nice small size castle. Visited several castles in Japan, and this become on of my top-rank.
A lot of intresting things to see inside, and a great view from the top, over the lake.

“A real sense of feudal Japan”
Reviewed 7 July 2014 via mobile

This beautiful castle really gives a sense of what Japan used to be in feudal times.
It's located on a hill that completely dominates the surroundings. You can see the entire town and nearby lands.
Inside is well preserved and you can see several samurai armors, swords and helmets.
A must see.

“Excellent castle”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

One of Japan's great original castles, it is small but well maintained and beautifully set in grounds.
We went to Matuse to see the castle and were not disappointed.

“One of the few originals”
Reviewed 19 March 2014

Matsue castle is one of only 12 castles in Japan that survived in its more or less original appearance. Access is free up to the castles´ main door (not just the outer gate as is usual) which means you can enjoy it even in early morning hours. The castle itself is accessible too but you must wait until the official opening hours. There are other attractions in the walking distance around the castle as well.

“Great view!”
Reviewed 5 March 2014

Matsue Castle is one of the few (mostly) original castles I've been to in Japan. The Castle grounds are well preserved and there's often men in samurai or ninja outfits wandering around. The inside of the castle is a museum of sorts with some artifacts and replicas and so forth. It's quite dark inside, but you get a real sense of what a real castle was like. The stairs are steep and can be quite slippery (especially in socks - you're required to take your shoes off to enter!). The view from the top is spectacular, particularly as the sun was going down over Lake Shinji. Although there's bars, the viewing area is open, so I imagine it is quite chilly in winter. It certainly was an interesting experience.
