“Clean & Clear Water!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 September 2013

We took the bus tour (www.japanican.com) to Lake Shikotsu & Lake Toya. I've to praise the Japanese for keeping the water so clean & clear. The view is magnificent. Though the boat ride in Lake Shikotsu was about 30 minutes, it's very relaxing.

“Kayaking to see the clear, clear water!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 August 2013

Kayaking is the best way to really see this beautiful lake close. English speaking booking/guiding available at Ootaki Outdoor Adventures on Route 276 between Toya and Shikotsu (need your own car to get there). 2 hours of kayak instruction, snack time on a beach, shrimp catching and cooking, swimming. Price includes CD of your tour pictures and quick-dry clothes/water shoes can be rented cheaply. Guideing style is a little Japanese-style dictatorial (You WILL wear a hat!!!), but a fun tour.

“Along the 276 shore are a Moss Gorge and Bifue Falls.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 August 2013

The moss gorge (Koke no Domon) and Bifue falls (taki) are both along the 276 road that goes along the (I think) southern shore of Lake Shikotsu. They are a nice way to enjoy your time within close distance to Chitose airport.

Koke no Domon is free (though they will ask for a small donation) and is an easy, though sandy, walk up to a lookout point. You can't go into the gorge because of conservation efforts. And while toilet facilities are listed on the map, none were available when we went.

Further along the road (about 3-5 kilometers...after two tunnels) towards Toya is a small road with a sign pointing towards Bifue Falls. The road is gravel and there is a one-lane bridge that leads to a parking area. From there is a rough path to the falls. The walk will take about 20-30 minutes one way, and in summer it is quite overgrown and wet. There are also some sketchy (some evidence of landslide/erosion/narrow path) spots so sound walking shoes such as hiking boots or sneakers are recommended. I would not recommend this walk for people with small children or those not used to a little hiking, but the falls themselves are beautiful-probably the best in the southern part of Hokkaido.

“Worth a visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 July 2013

Great for walking around the lake and enjoying the lovely scenery. There are some shops for a quick snack around the lake with plenty of seats for you to rest your weary feet.
