Route Inn Grantia Hakodate Ekimae
Ranked #15 of 96 Hotels / Ryokan in Hakodate
Reviewed 2 January 2013

The hotel is located just right next to the JR Hakodate Station, very convenient. The rooms are extremely small. For someone who is overweight, you probably can't even use the shower room. So most people will ended doing their shower at the SPA, which is located on the 13 floor.

Check-in time is 1500Hrs and check-out time is 1000Hrs, which in my personal opinion creates lot of inconvenience.

We stayed one night in this hotel. It is very conveniently located near the train station, buses and trams. Checking in and out was very easy, the reception staff were very pleasant and helpful. Our party had two rooms, both were very clean and comfortable, the bathrooms were the usual compact Japanese capsule style. We did not take breakfast at the hotel preferring to take it at the fish market which is just across the square from the hotel. As we were only there one night we did not use any of the hotel's facilities, we would be happy to stay there again.

To start with the conclusion, this is a good hotel if you want to stay in a hotel close to the Hakodate Station.

Be careful when booking as there is another Grantia Hotel in Hakodate - Hotel Grantia Hakodate Goryokaku. I found the KNT booking page via Trip Advisor was the cheapest rate at 5250 yen a night including breakfast but in my haste booked the wrong hotel. After explaining the situtation over the phone, the booking was changed to the Grantia Hotel near the station at no extra cost - whew!

I wanted to stay at the Hotel LaVista - my favourite hotel in Hokkaido, but my work colleagues said "its only for sleeping", so proximity to our trade fair was more important. The LaVista is more expensive at 8500 yen a night but I would happily pay the extra out of my own pocket to stay there even if it means a 15min walk in the snow.

The Grantia Hotel is part of the Route Inn chain and the branding from outside the Hotel is mainly about Route Inn. Built around 2005, the hotel was reasonably new when this review was written. My train from Sapporo arrived around 11am and although I was not able to check in until 3pm, the kind staff were happy to look after my luggage. The gentleman who checked me in spoke Japanese with an Chinese or Korean accent. Without exception, all the hotel staff were kind, genuine and professional. The package I purchased included a free rice cracker and on top of that, a local company drink campaign also supplied me with a can of Shochu. On checking the special bath pass when I arrived in my room, I noted it was for the woman`s bath. Now thats what I call a good welcome! On reconfirmation however, I was told I received the pass in error and it was replaced with a pass for the mens bath.

We finished work around 10pm and after saying goodnight to my colleagues at the front desk, I entered the lift with two women. In in their mid thirties, they met up in Hakodate to remember their days together at University. Like me, they had been enjoying a drink or two over dinner and after a joke in the elevator, it was agreed we should all go for another drink that evening. With no cocktail bar in the hotel, we made our way to another hotel near the LaVista for a 1000 yen cocktail with a view. Lucky!

The onsen at the Grantia is on the top floor (13F) Unlike the LaVista their is no outdoor bath and the steam from the bath means their is no view. There was some mould on the tap fittings, but that can be found in any Japanese public bath. The bath water is warmer than the LaVista and a brown color. Otherwise everything was meticulously clean and orderly.

My room faced behind the hotel and the view is not as impressive as those at the front of the hotel. The room was on the small side. The bed was a little hard and like many non-Japanese, I had trouble finding the right balance of air and warmth with the window and air conditioning, resulting is waking up numerous times during the night.

The breakfast was ordinary. I was looking forward to the famous Hakodate raw squid for breakfast, but there was none. I have been spoiled by the bowl of salmon roe for breakfast at the La Vista.

Would I stay at this hotel again? Probably not. Not because it is bad, but if I cant stay at the LaVista, I want to try the Loiser Hotel and the Super Hotel to compare. If however, you are looking for a hotel near Hakodate Station which is good - the Hotel Route Inn Grantia Hakodate is a good choice.

The airport bus will bring you to the Hakodate JR station, from which the hotel is just about 70m away. If you arrive by JR train, the hotel is on the left side of the station's exit (basically, there are 2 hotels on either side of the station. The Loisir is on the right side).
Do note that the Hotel does not have the English name written on the building, so its location certainly makes it easier for non-Japanese travellers like us. The morning fish market area is next to the Loisir hotel, so its convenient to walk over from the hotel. Plenty of food options around the hotel as well.

Arrived in early winter and it was bitter cold even during the day ! Hakodate is a nice city for a stay of about 2 days. Do read about the attractions. The location of the hotel & JR station is not in the town centre but you can easily take a tram to the centre and most attractions, including the ropeway to Mt Hakodate (a short walk up from tram stop).
In fact, the walk from the Red Brick warehouses (where town centre is) back to the JR station is a mere 20 mins walk. We did that in the evening when it was snowing. Nice cold walk back to the hotel.

About the hotel, it is the typical Japanese business hotel. Very clean, but small. I have stayed in many japanese business hotels (which has very small modular bathrooms) before, and by far, this hotel the smallest bathroom. So, do watch for it.

The topfloor of the hotel has an excellent common bath area, with separate facilities for men and women. From the hot pool, you can have a great view of Hotel Loisir and the other buildings across the road. The water in the hot pool seems to have minerals, since it is brown/reddish in color. Just outside the changing room, there is a common lounge area where you can some beer/drinks from the vending machines, and watch TV in your bathrobe. There is also a partitioned area where two massueses offer body and foot reflexology for a fee. So if you find the room's toilet too small, you can always use the common bath :)

Overall, the hotel is very clean, functional, good for a place to sleep at night, and is in a great location (especially if you are coming or leaving by JR train). Good price and value for the location. The staff does not speak much English but there is a tourist desk at the entrance of JR station where you can get english materials. We did not eat in the hotel as there were plenty of small restaurants at the fish market area. Also, as with japanese business hotel, do not expect any english channels on TV (not even CNN). Remember, the target market for these Japanese business hotels are the Japanese business folks, not english speaking traveller/tourists like us. So I think as long as you set your expectations right, you will be fine with this hotel.

Few Americans visit Hakodate but if you are going to Hokkaido, definitely stay here for one night and see the night view from Mount Hakodate, try some food in the morning market, and visit Motomachi. The people here are especially warm and unguarded; it's a bit of backwater here and I found the people more authentic.
I found this hotel to be extremely convenient for a short stay- especially if you arrive by train. The area around the train station is lovely- you see the harbor, Mount Hakodate and it's right next to the morning market. The hotel is right in front of the station. The staff is extremely nice and courteous, very professionally run place. A great 'ofuro" on the top floor with magnificent view. The rate is extremely reasonable , great value. Small room but to be expected in Japan (we were quite comfortable) We had an incredible panoramic view from a big window in the room. Very clean. There are other places in Hakodate which are very nice but it's hard to beat the value of this place. We were quite happy here. For booking, it may be difficult to book by internet (in English). Route Inn is a chain in Japan. I called the hotel directly form United States- the hotel staff will try to speak English.
