We paid 4800yen for 1 night at this hotel. The room was slightly larger than expected since we were already expecting an extremely small room after our nights at other hotels in the nights prior to this.
It is located just opposite the train station and is also near a tram station.

We arrived early evening and were delighted to see the building as soon as we exited the train station. A twin room with a capsule style bathroom. Some people would find these claustrophobic but it was perfectly adequate for us. A deep soaking bathtub with a hand held shower, a sink and a toilet with the bidet seats Japan is famous for. A little disconcerting when you use the lid as a seat and it flushes automatically because it thinks you have sat down. If you just need somewhere to sleep and shower while travelling the country this is a good choice. They happily stored our luggage the next morning as our train didn't depart til around 2pm and we got a tram pass and would've gone up the cable car except there was some security issue and they closed it - may have been the weather. We still enjoyed looking around for the morning and did the Seikan Tunnel tour the previous day.

Room Tip: We had room 868 which was set back from the main building

The hotel is western style. It's a basic hotel but if you are in transit it's a perfect choice. Just in front of JR station. Hotel has a laundry and personnel is very kind. The price compared to quality is very good.

First impression from sight at JR station - it looks like a small factory.

Booked 2 rooms - double and triple share for 2 nights. Good location, near the JR station.
Experience at checkin counter was not good. Staff lacks sincerity and does not bother to even put on a smile. This is totally different from all other hotels we've stayed in Japan.
Double room was small for husband and wife while triple room was alright for 2 teens and 1 kid.

We bought a small packet of tako from a supermarket and requested the front office assistant to cut it but for 2 evening, they could not provide the service, citing the restaurant is closed and there is no knife available in the hotel to cut the tako? We have to throw the food away eventually.

We happened to chance upon Comfort Hotel(just a few metres away) while seeking directions and the hospitality displayed from staff at Comfort Hotel was a stark contrast to Smile Hotel. Weather was cold outside as it was snowing and we were offered free coffee to keep ourselves warm from the reception even though we were non guest there.

The Smile Hotel is the best value hotel in all of Hokkaido. As far as value for money is concerned, it can't be topped. The location is excellent, situated as it is on the opposite side of the square from the Hakodate Railway Station and between the two is the bus terminal. The rooms, although small, are clean and well appointed, with opening windows which allow guests to control ventilation. We were located in the "C" building which is set back from the busy road and we were able to sleep well, even with the open windows. The buffet breakfast offered a good choice of Japanese and Western food and was sufficient for our needs. The free internet in the rooms (for those with their own laptops) and internet bays on the ground floor, next to the coin operated laundry and drink vending machines were a big success with our group. The staff of the hotel were very helpful with information about Hakodate and surrounding areas and we took advantage of the maps provided. To sum up, amazing value for price, very convenient, clean and comfortable.

It was a convenient, small, low price hotel with good serving staff and design. Its simple lobby decoration and room design brought us 2 comfortable nights. We booked a small double room, but the space was big enough for us opening our luggage case and repacking. It was equipped with a big window facing exactly to the Mt. Hakodate which was our trip destination. Staff were nice and helpful.
