“Good location and value for money”
Reviewed 28 February 2014

This hotel is right near all the main tourist attractions. The room was clean and adequate size, breakfast consisted of toast and tea or coffee. Staff were very helpful. For the price, I really couldn't have asked for more. A couple of minor cons: snowplow cleaning the street below my room woke me up at 4am; hotel has no communal hot bath; room was a little too hot, even with the heater on low setting.

Room Tip: Request a room that doesn't face the street where the snowplow operates early in the morning.

The hotel is steps away from the main sights I the town (canal, glass shops) and is about a 15 min walk from the train station.

Rooms are small but everything you need is there.facilities are decently new.

Includes complimentary breakfast

Close to the JR station and other attractions but far enough to be quiet at night. Very close to the Canal area and some small restaurants. Was impressed by the solid grand exterior of the building and it had quite unique decor inside..on entering I felt like I was in a musuem. Found out It was origninally a bank and it is definitely an ancient building. Our room was very clean although very small and the bed was comfortable enough. However the breakfast was a disappointment as it is all prepacked and nothing much, very basic bread, jam, butter and coffee/tea and it is self- service. Free Wifi in the lobby was a plus point. Security is good and the staff were polite, friendly and helpful. Overall it is not too bad for the price we paid and by Japanese standard we cannot complain.

The hotel is near the tourists spots and is minutes away from the Otaru canal and the shopping street.
Easy to find dinner nearby, however, the nearest convenience shop is about half a km away, not a big problem though. The staff are polite and eager to help.
However, do not expect a 4 star hotel, it is more of a 3 star.

Pros:
Reasonable price with simple breakfast provided. Breakfast consist of bread & coffee/tea.
Free usage of wifi at hotel lobby.
Great location. 3 minutes walk to canal & 10 minutes walk to sushi street.
Room amenities provided includes shampoo, bath gel, hair dryer & razor. There's also a small fridge in the room.
Cons:
Booked a double. Room is small but that's common for Japan standard.
To get to the hotel lobby need to carry my luggage up a short flight of stairs (5-6 steps). Not a big issue as my luggage is not heavy.
Hotel charge Jpy 1,000 for overnight parking. However need to drive the car out of the carpark by 10am the next day in order not to incur additional parking charges.

Otaru is a very nice city with it's canal. Vibrant hotel is just around the corner so the location is perfect. The hotel was a former bank and the ground floor where the bar is has a funny aspect. The rooms are average and the free breakfast very basic. The price is moderate so it's a good choice to stay.

Located only one block north of the Otaru canals, Hotel Vibrant's location couldn't be better. It's converted from a 1879 old bank building to a boutique hotel in 2002. Thus, you'll see a charming time period café in the lobby and sometimes stairs that let to nowhere (that's a little spooky, if you ask me).

Lobby was located on 2/F up a flight of stairs. With our 5 big pieces of luggage and a toddler in toll, we were really relieved to know there was a working elevator that would go up to our rooms on 5/F. Check-in was efficient. Reception was friendly and helpful with restaurant recommendation and booking. Would be nice if someone could help us with our luggage though.

Our room faced the main street but we didn't find it noisy. Room was really quite basic but clean. Capsule size mini shower box and super tiny capsule toilet. Wouldn't recommend it if you are claustrophobic.

We booked 2 twin rooms but were given 2 triple rooms. In the triple room, there were 1 small twin and 1 slightly bigger twin bed. There was also an upper bunk bed above the desk that gave the room a dormitory feel. I guess the room could technically sleep up to 4, but it won't leave much space to walk or open the luggage then. A small fridge, a tiny kettle, no phone in the room so no way to get in touch with reception except to physically go down to lobby. Less than 5 TV channels, only in Japanese. No safe. WIFI only available in lobby.

Complimentary breakfast was provided at the lobby. 4 choices of bread, simple butter and jam, and coffee/tea. Simple but good enough to start the day. Milk/ orange juice was an extra JPY 100. Small toasters were provided to warm the bread. Nice touch. All self service by the way.

Parking was available behind the hotel, chargeable for JPY 1,000 per night and more if you drive the car out during the day.

For its low pricing and superb location, Hotel Vibrant offered an attractive option to explore the key places of interests in Otaru. If you prefer a more comfortable room and don't mind paying a little bit more, you may like to upgrade to Hotel Authent.
