Dormy Inn Premium Otaru
Ranked #1 of 22 Hotels / Ryokan in Otaru
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 27 August 2014 via mobile

I stayed here 2 nights with a friend. There are so many great things about this hotel.

(1) it's very close to the station. (2) if you're driving (as we were) there is underground parking, (3) Otsru isn't a large town so this hotel was very close to the city centre and the main tourist attractions, (4) other hotels in this area maybe slightly cheaper, but this hotel had the best buffet breakfast I've tasted ever, and I've stayed in some of the best hotels around the world, some 6 stars (yes- six star hotels do exist). (5) this hotel also benefits from a real onsen which you can enjoy all night from the moment you check in until 10am the next day, (6) as you'll see from other's photos, the rooms are clean and spacious. Need I go on?
There are just so many free perk services at this hotel, the extra few hundred/thousand yen makes it all worth while. I know this is a premium rank hotel, but the quality of this place and the amazing experience made me want to try other premium dormy inns in Japan.

Please do book your breakfast . Honestly it was the best breakfast if ever tasted and amazing value for money,

This is just great to stay in for the first night of the trip. The location is great to go the tourist spots by the canal. The driving distance to the shopping and sight-seeing districts is also short. Tasty food is around.

Great location with good amenities. Very near to the Otaru JR station and Chuo bus terminal. There's a LeTao cafe & supermart nearby. About 10-15 mins walk from Otaru Canal. Anyway, Otaru is a small place and all within walking distance. Provided all day free coffee, tea and plain hot ramen at night. Their Onsen is nice. Reception speaks English. We stayed in twin room, room size is good enough for 2. There's free wifi in the room. We stayed at the 8th floor, near to the lift, but it is not noisy. The Onsen, restaurant (I think laundry also) are all on the 2nd floor.

We spent one night here on a three-night trip around Hokkaido. The hotel is in a very convenient spot, right near the train station, and not too far from the sites near the harbour.

The rooms were very nice - newly renovated, tastefully decorated and comfortable. Small, of course, but that's typical for a downtown Japanese hotel.

The public baths (onsen) were also very nice, and they offer complimentary soba (noodle soup) in the evenings, as a snack. In the morning we were overwhelmed by the quality and variety at the breakfast buffet. Definitely not to be missed.

We were all Japanese-speakers, so I can't comment on how well the staff understand English. (That seems to be an occasional theme in other posts here.)

Otaru is a very cute little town, and we'd definitely stay here at the Dormy Inn again.

Stayed there one night before our cruise. Very nice amenities in the room, even though the room was tiny and no bath tub. Attentive staff. A bit too crowded in the public bath area with tourists who don't know the Japanese Onsen etiquette, which was annoying. Great location to go to JR Otaru station and River Walk area. Very nice sweet shop next to the entrance. Mister Donuts located in the same building also.

Hotel front desk staff don't understand English. When it comes to English conversation, their attitude turns down as time goes by and just let you say what you want and then do what they want without understanding and listening to your need. Extra charge is paid when I check in the hotel even I have point out the terms in conditions written in the printed voucher by the hotel booking agency.

Please prepare extra budget when you book through booking agency and a translator before entering this hotel.

Spent one night before a cruise. Great location. Across the street from the terminal otaru station. The cruise ship had free shuttle service to the first Otaru station. The terminal is the third. We walked to the dock but it was quiet a walk. Within walking distance to canal and department store. We also walked to the tourist shopping district.
Most staff speak English and are very friendly and helpful.
Japanese decor in the bedroom. Shoji doors separate bathroom, refrigerator area from the sleeping area. It took a while to figure out how to turn on the lights as there was no key card to the room. There was a real key. There were no English channels on the TV. Wifi in the room.
Breakfast was great. Good variety of English and Japanese menu items.
Didn't eat at a local restaurant. We went to Lawson's convenience store and bought juice and sushi and a salad and picked up baked goods from the station bakery.
