Dormy Inn Wakkanai is a good choice with its location very near to JR Station. The onsen was great! It was very clean and the facilities looked new.Twin Room was comfortable and functional. The sea view from the room is also very nice.

This is a nice hotel, big rooms, nice view. Our only disappointment was that that the hotel restaurant was close (hotels word!) on the night of our stay. This proved to be a bit of a problem as local restaurants didn't have the plastic food models that are common in Japan, while we have no Japanese. We took our chances a restaurant around the corner and got a great meal!

I was a bit apprehensive when seeing the tired looking building from afar, but it's the inside where this hotel shines. New rooms with excellent beds, an electric massage chair, phone charger, kettle, the full works. Staff is very attentive and helpful. Location is 2 minutes across the JR station and there are plenty of restaurants just around it.

So far, all the Dormy Inn's I have stayed in delivers everything a traveller needs. Wakkanai even more so. Accessibility, room comfort, service. With Wakkanai's fickle weather, the ofuro and rotenburo at the top of the hotel, gives some much warmth and comfort.

After staying in several hotels where the floor was more comfortable than the bed, the Dormy Inn was a comfortable surprise. The breakfast was a nice Japanese breakfast with several western additions. There is a nice onsen on the roof as well.

Very easy to locate this hotel - just step out of the JR Wakkanai Stn and look towards 2 o'clock direction. One of the tallest, if not the tallest, building in town. Just 4 mins walk at regular pace from the station, else under 2 if one broke into a jog. Booked 2 rooms - very small but very clean & no smell of smoke. The hot singing soba offered free at the hotel's solo restaurant was a hit with the guests esp. on a cold night. All patiently waited for the 1 cook to cook up bowls of noodles - once done, guests wiped tables, pushed in chairs and stacked used bowls & cutlery at the food cart in an orderly manner - typical Japanese discipline!

Hotel's buffet breakfast was phenomenal - freshest of sashimi (watched from hotel window as fishing boats pulled into Wakkanai port at 3+am) as well as hot dishes for those who prefer cooked food. Jap (porridge, rice, seaweed, smoked fish, etc) & Western fare (bread, cereals, pastries, sausages, scrambled eggs) aplenty. Never imagined such a small restaurant could offer so much. Once again, considerate guests made things easy on the very friendly Jap aunties who wished everyone good morning and thank you with big smiles as trays are returned. Bravo...

Friends paid a visit to the rooftop onsen (hot springs) - pretty relaxing in the hot water as chilly winds blew in from the open sea. Being open air, light drizzle came down on them too. Saw night lights from the town and ships at sea.

Since the hotel's restaurant only served breakfast, we paid a visit to the orange building at back of train station - has a giant crab at its entrance (see pic, hotel at left). There was a seafood market at the ground floor and restaurant above it. No regrets as we had the best bowl of sashimi-don (raw fish rice bowl) & unagi-don (grilled eel rice bowl) for lunch, and charsiu miso ramen (noodles with grilled meat in beanpaste soup) for dinner. After downing this meal, we walked through cold winds and wet rains without a problem. Yum at reasonable prices!

Hotel was about 10mins brisk walk from the Wakkanai Port (found out on the cold cold morning we took a Heartland ferry to Rishiri & Rebun Islands for a day tour). There was also a large convenience store "Sapporo Drug Store" around the corner - plenty of choices to stock up on food, fruits, drinks, etc. Friendly to travellers' budget.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a high floor for best sea views

I had a comfortable stay for 2 nights at this business hotel in Wakkanai though I was there on holiday. I found the room to be clean and comfortable though the bathroom and toilet may be small by western standards. The stay includes free access to the hot springs spas (both indoor and outdoor) at the top level which impressed me with its clean and tasteful decor. There were 2 free internet terminals in the lobby. The hotel is about 10 minutes walk from each of the train station and the ferry terminal. The staff speaks limited English however.
